Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

I feel a little like Bill Murray reporting from Punxsutawney. We seem to be in a seven-day weather loop; another Saturday looks like it will be inclement for golf with a southerly front forecast to bring rain in the morning but forecast to ease in the afternoon. With the first round of the club champs for the Men scheduled in the programme it could be a damp day on the golf course. The grades for the club champs are similar to last years grades. It would be good to see a full 16 players qualifying in all for grades for the first round of match play scheduled for the 14th of September.

There were 7 players who braved the conditions last week in the monthly medal competition. It must have helped the Woodward Cup team who started their season of well with a win against Pegasus. There were at least over half the team out on the course in miserable conditions last Saturday. Good luck to the Woodward cup team on Sunday who play Waitikiri at Russley.

Unfortunately, with the poor weather conditions the Breast cancer foundation “pink “day was postponed. The match committee will look to have another date in the programme, as well as a day for Prostate cancer awareness when we meet in the next week.

4BBB Tournament – 2nd August 2019 – from Kath Sullivan

Harewood had a good field of 74 players for their winter tournament – a 4BBB Gross, Net and Stableford. After one of the coldest weeks of the winter Colin had the course and putting greens in exceptional order. Our thanks to the Greenkeepers.

The weather was our biggest worry – however Friday the 2nd dawned fine and although there was some wind and a bit of cloud – there was no rain.

Our thanks to the Caterers for their very nourishing soup and lovely food for the tournament luncheon.

The Committee, as usual, did a great job with the raffles and their organisation skills and there were still golfers in the Clubhouse when the Committee decided it was time to go home. A lovely atmosphere in the Clubhouse. Our thanks to Craig for providing all the results, cards, pins and straightest drive.

Pollock Cup tees off in wintry conditions – from Anne Dick

The first round of Pollock Cup was held last Sunday at Waimari Beach, where we played a very strong Christchurch team. This year our Pollock Cup team is: Catherine Knight, Anne Dick, Debbie Scott, Lynn Brand, Pam McTaggart and our two draft players Rachel Eder from Clearwater and Cheryl Kemp from Waitikiri. In addition to these players we have several members registered to play when players are unavailable, unlike many other clubs.

After keeping warm on Saturday thankful that we weren't golfing in that weather, we woke to a fine, yet cold, winter morning. While Waimari Beach was damp underfoot the course was in very good condition, especially the greens. We knew we had to bring our A games with all of the Christchurch team on lower handicaps except at number 6. Our team fought hard the whole way to the end but unfortunately we lost to Christchurch 4-2. Congratulations to Rachel who defeated Melissa Newburn at number 3, and Cheryl who also picked up her first win in the Harewood colours playing at number 6. Debbie Scott and Pam McTaggart fought strongly on the back 9 but unfortunately were beaten by Nicky Webb and Marina Neylon. The final two matches were closely fought the entire day with there only ever being 2 shots in them. By the 18th there was a large crowd following, as both matches went to the wire. Unfortunately current Canterbury representatives Catherine Bell and Olive Tapu defeated Catherine and Anne, both 1down.

Big thanks to Norm McTaggart, Lynley Gainsford, and Christine Herd for caddying, and to Kath Sullivan who braved the cold to be our ever-supportive manager.

This Sunday we play a very strong Waitikiri at Christchurch. Tee time 9.30am off #4.

Woodward Cup – from Team Captain Gavin O’Hara

Our Woodward Cup Team got off to the perfect start in the 2019 season, with a 5 and Half / 2 and Half victory against a gamely Pegasus side at a soft and blustery Waitikiri track with fast greens. Good wins for Rhian Hamilton 7/6, Josh Smith 2/1, Scott Manyweathers 1up, Sam Watkinson 2/1, and Daniel Lundt 3/1 over our old boy member Rob Gregory, steered the team to a solid opening victory. Matt Mclean was spear heading the team and was involved in a tough match where he secured a good half for the squad, Unfortunate defeats for debutants Kerry Branson 3/2 and Gavin O’Hara 3/1, however these two look to put things right this weekend as the team is off to Russley to face a strong Waitikiri team who also managed a good win in week 1 against Coringa 5/3.
