Club Captain Update – from Doug Claridge

It looks a mixed bag this weekend weather wise. Saturday the early morning rain is forecast to retreat to the peninsula, and Sunday is looking fine. The course is closed on Sunday, as Harewood hosts the Woodward cup round. The Woodward team lie in second place after 4 rounds and take on Russley off the first tee at 12pm. All Woodward teams tee off from 12.00pm, and I am sure there will be a good support out to see Canterbury’s top golfers tackle the Woodlands course off the black tees. The Men’s Blank team play Avondale at Christchurch on Sunday and “Dad’s army “, the Presidents play Christchurch in their second match of the Presidents competition.

A big thank you to all those men and ladies who rolled their sleeves up on Wednesday morning on the volunteer working bee. Players may notice some areas around the course getting a haircut and tidy up. As spring is upon us and the grass is growing Colin and his team are busy with the playing areas of the course. The volunteer workings bees are a good way to keep the garden areas looking good.

This weekend is the first round of the club champs for the men and the first round of qualifying for the Ladies combined with a LGU. Best of luck for those who have matches in the Intermediate and Junior A and B grades.

Last week’s monthly medal was a good test of golf in beautiful spring conditions.

Bereavement - Nancy Raymond

It is with sadness that we record the death of Nancy Raymond – Nancy was 96 years of age.

Nancy joined the Harewood staff as Secretary Manager in 1977. She stayed in this position until 1986 (approx.). There were 1200 members. The Ladies helped Nancy with franking, folding reports and letters – no e-mails in those days!! The Secretary/ Managers job was a busy one, but Nancy tackled the job with enthusiasm, and welcomed many members to Harewood. At the time of Nancy’s appointment – Russley and Christchurch Golf Clubs would not take ladies until they had a handicap of at least 30. We taught many members to play golf – some moved on to join their husbands/partners, but many stayed at Harewood. At this time, we were the largest Golf Club in the South Island.

Nancy had a very full life – married with two boys – helped her husband with a business, took an active part in the Cub Movement. Taught herself to play the Bag pipes, St Georges Hospital as a Treasurer. She was an avid bridge player. Nancy also supported Harewood at Champion of Champions and Pennant finals. When Nancy retired from her position at the Club she played golf on Tuesdays and Sundays. She was a stickler for the rules (as many of you will remember).

She purchased a Salver to be competed for as a mixed Stableford game to be played between the Ladies and the Midweek Men. We still play for this Salver today.

Nancy’s last recorded card was in 2006.

Kath Sullivan

Pollock Cup Update

Fourth round of the Pollock Cup at Waitikiri vs Waimari.

Very cold and wet, but the team started well and came home with a 4 1/2 – 1 1/2 win.

Catherine, Rachel, Pam and Lynn all had great wins. Cheryl a half, and Anne was up against Kate Turner who was in fine form. Anne played great golf, with some unlucky putts not to drop. The winners all had close matches, and well-deserved wins.

Next Sunday 15th is at Russley vs Weedons 9.30 tee off.

Thanks again to our Caddies who braved the cold. Liz, Annabel, Helen and John for a short time. Much appreciated.

Well done Team!!

Julie Jones - Team Manager

Wednesday Working Bee

Thanks to the 14 members who helped out on Wednesday.

Great to able to get some areas tided up, and it makes such a difference having plenty of help.

Hope to try and get in another one before Christmas.

Thanks again.

Julie Jones

Woodward Cup
Update from Danny O'Neill

In the premier Men’s Interclub competition our Harewood 8-man team lie 2nd on the performance table with 4 wins from 4 games (8 points).

Team culture, first class individual attitude and golfing skills have been to the fore with notable achievements to date from Josh Smith, Scott Manyweathers and Sam Watkinson recording perfect win records.

This by no means eclipses the efforts of other members Rhian Hamilton, Daniel Lundt and Ryan Barham. Rhian and Daniel 2 down with 4 holes to play registered important victory comebacks and on Sunday Ryan sunk a knee-trembling putt on the last to record a half and team victory.

This Sunday sees Harewood at home with a start time of 12 midday off no.1 playing the tough Russley team who are 5th on the table.

It would be a huge mental boost to the team if members could come along to support the guys and see some great golf.
