Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

The Coronavirus is having an unprecedented effect on our society and how we interact with each other. It is having far reaching effects into our lives, and golf is not immune to being affected. Our golf club membership, like most clubs in NZ, has a high percentage of membership age group that sit within the at-risk group. Whilst at present it is deemed “safe” to continue to play golf, sensible precautions are needed. If you are unwell, don’t play. Remember to wash your hands as advised by the department of health, and if you are in self isolation due to returning from overseas please do not play. With sensible precautions we can limit person to person contact and still play a round of golf.

The government’s new restrictions on indoor gatherings of more than 100 people dictate that shotgun starts will be suspended for the foreseeable future. At present Saturday golf can continue and we will endeavor to maintain a competition programme. As with everything with the virus we are in a flexible state changing day to day. Whilst there is no community spread of the virus at present the next few weeks/months may see a different state of rules regarding social interaction.

Neville has advised members of the precautions and changes the club has put in place following advice from NZ Golf. These are:

· Removing bunker rakes (new local rule in place)

· Removing pins on the practice green

  • Closing drinking fountains
  • Closing ball washers (currently removed for restoration anyway)
  • Removing shared sunscreen
  • Regularly cleaning surfaces in and around our facility

On the course NZ Golf recommend that players do not remove the pin flags when putting.

The first round of the Men's Jennian 4BBB competition has been completed, the winners of this round will have had and email from DotGolf advising them of their tee time on the 28th of March for the second round. Please remember that matches need to be played on or before the scheduled date. The second round for the Ladies and 3rd round for the Men is scheduled for the 18th of April.

This weekend is a stableford round for the Men and a par round for the Ladies.

The Armstrong Motor Group 2020 Twilight Golf Series – night 6

Despite the damp and chilly weather earlier in the day the 44 strong field were rewarded with a fine evening for week 6 of 8.

For the Men we had Harry Weeds take first place on countback with 22 points - playing off a 2 handicap on the back 9 and shooting 2 under par, to just pip Tony Carroll. NTP was Peter Ophuis on #13.

For the Women we also had a countback situation with Lynley Gainsford winning ahead of Vanessa Johns; both with 18 points. Jo McNicholl took the NTP honours on #15.

A reminder that we will start earlier for the remaining weeks due to the light so a 5:30pm shotgun.

Please book in so we can get tees and groups sorted on the night.

Chris Clarke - New Senior Greenkeeper / 2iC

I’m pleased to advise that Chris will be joining our staff as Colin’s 2iC on Monday April 6th.

Some of you may remember Chris who was on staff here for 7 years up until 2013. He was here during our major renovation so is very familiar with the course and irrigation systems in particular.

Chris joins us from Kaiapoi Golf Club where he was sole charge and prior to this he was 2iC at Templeton GC.

Please say hi and welcome Chris when you see him.

Driving Range Ball Machine Now Working Again

The issues we have experienced with the ball machine have been identified and fixed so driving range members will again be able to access the machine as normal.

We appreciate your patience during this down time.
