Dear Guest, Friday, 21 August, 2020

Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

The club championship entries are strong, there will be some jockeying for positions in the gross results after this weekend. With 2 more qualifying rounds to play, there are a number of players who need a good round to be in contention for the match play rounds starting the 6th of September. All grades have strong fields for the match play rounds. The 6th of September will be the first round of match play for Junior A, B and intermediate as there are 16 qualifiers in these grades. The senior grade will skip the first round and match play rounds will commence 12th September. Finals day is the 26th of September.

The Peninsula Beachfront Shootout is well underway, and the first prize accommodation package will be honoured at present. As we are all aware in COVID times, getting there is an issue at present. The change to the World Handicap system following the COVID break, and possibly an error in DotGolf, has created results that are confusing the system and making it not add up. There is a little tidying up do behind the scenes and so an accurate leader board can be produced. There are 10 more potential scoring rounds left to play to decide the final 19 who will play on the shootout Sunday on November 22nd. Due to the number of entries and tied scores there may be a second shootout to decide the 19th slot. On my workings on the back of an envelope – the cut sits at 220 (combined 6 stableford scores) from the 75 entries.

Congratulations to Dave Shipley, Harewood Golf Clubs Patron and Life Member. He had a good result on the par 3 15th this week scoring an ace with a great line into the front pin.

Well done to the Woodward Cup (7&1) and the Blank Cup (5&3) teams scoring wins in their interclub matches, unfortunately the ladies Pollock Cup team had a loss at home.

A reminder that the volunteer garden morning is next Wednesday 26th – come and give a hand in helping make the surrounds around the clubrooms look good for the warmer months.

At present we continue to enjoy golf at level 2 again, it is a matter adjusting to leaving the pin in when you putt. Now the days are warming up remember to take your own water bottle as the taps are turned off on the drinking fountains, please keep washing your hands to keep everyone safe.

Pollock Cup 2020 - from Julie Jones

Harewood played their first game at home against Christchurch on Sunday. Some very strong teams this year.

We got off to a good start on a very crisp sunny morning. Debbie Scott, Lynn Brand and Anne Dick all getting through to the 18th. Debbie and Lynn halved and Anne 1 down.

Catherine Knight, Jo Kent and Pam McTaggart unfortunately not to be so a 5/1 loss. We play Russley at Pegasus next Sunday at 9.30am.

Thank you to the caddies and the Harewood supporters. Great to see so many of you.

Woodward Cup Report – from Gavin O’Hara

The Woody team travelled over to Bottle Lake last Sunday for our next round fixture in the Woodward Cup 2020 and were pleased to see good crowds watching on a beautiful winter’s day.

Our opponents on Sunday were Hororata, who themselves got off to an ok start with a draw in round one. Due to the Covid announcement last week, this allowed Matt McLean & Rhian Hamilton to become available to the side, but we went with the same side as round 1, and boy, did it pay off!!!

The team were fantastic from front to back and pulled in a 7-1 win against a good Hororata side, and this emphatic result has put Harewood top of the table after 2 rounds.

Comprehensive wins for Scott Manyweathers, Manyweathers throwing a barrage of birdies early on, and never let Owen Miller back in, and run out to a solid 6&5 win. Daniel Lundt also had a superb 5&4 win against Steve Bell and Lundt is showing some good form early in the season.

Kerry Branson had a ding dong battle against Andrew Inch, and the match ebbed and flowed over the course of the round, with never more than one or two holes in it, but Kerry turn on his recent good form down the stretch and came home strong, putting his opponent under some real pressure, to win his 17th and 18th holes and gain a 2 up win for the team. Branson closing his match out in perfect fashion, by stiffing is second shot into his 18th hole (17th @ the Bottle), and his opponent having to hole his second shot to try and force a half and a great win for our number 7.

Gavin O’Hara playing number 8 for the second week running got off to the perfect start, getting up early, winning 3 of the first 4 holes, and then playing solid golf for the duration of his round, and never really letting his opponent back into the match. Throwing in back to back birdies around the turn on 7&8, from then on his opponent Roy Stieller found it hard to make up any real ground, with birdies hard to come by on the firm and fast Bottle Lake Greens, Gavin saw his match out with a solid 3&1 win. The top pair again didn’t disappoint, McLean keeping up his 100% record with a 1 up win over Dominic Brettkelly and holding off Hororata’s number 1.

Josh Smith also brough home a 1up win for the team, closing out his match with a beautiful left to right downhill swinging birdie putt from 20 feet to defeat Mark Weatherly, which put a smile on the big man’s face.

Our import James Howard got his first victory of the season with a powerful ball striking display in beating Anton Fouchee with a 2&1 win, to get his campaign off and running for the side. Harewood sit proudly at the top of the table on 4 points, and +12 games.

This week the side travel to Russley to take on Pegasus and if any of our members would like to come out and support, the team would really appreciate seeing some well-known friendly faces, and the chance to watch some of Canterbury’s best golfers.

Blank Cup Report - from Phil Barlow

After losing 3-5 to Waimairi Beach in the first round, the Blank team turned it around to beat Coringa 5-3 in the second round.

Five of the matches were taken to the last 2 holes so there were some close matches all around. Looks to be another close competition in Blank again this year with some very close results so far amongst the 10 teams, particularly with some clubs having the Blank grade as their top grade.

We are sitting midfield in 5th after the second round and look forward to a tough game against Clearwater at Clearwater this coming weekend. 11:30 tee so please come and support.

Volunteers Working Bee - Wednesday 26th August 9am - 11.30am

This working bee is going to be dedicated to the gardens and courtyard in front of the Club House. The green keepers have topped up the garden with compost blend, and irrigation will be in. All the plants will have been placed and ready to be planted.

The Picnic tables and other chairs will have been cleaned and ready to be stained, and also a general clean up in this area.

It is going to look amazing!!

We would really also appreciate your help to fund this extensive planting and would be grateful for any donations to this project. We have set up a small display in the club house of some of the plants to be used, and a donation box. Thank you for the donations so far!!!

If you can bring a shovel, spade, paintbrush, wire brush, rake and anything else you think might be useful. Please do.

Looking forward to seeing this area completed and making a much better outlook for all to enjoy.

See you there on the 26th.

Many thanks.

Julie Jones
