Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

Saturdays frost was a bone chiller. It did turn out fine for golf but It did unfortunately interrupt the Saturday golf bookings with play not able to start until 9:00am. Full fields for Saturday golf are the norm at present and this weekend is no exception. It is important to be on time ready to tee off at your start time This helps reduce delays that concertina and frustrate players behind you.

In considering the players behind, remember the new rules of golf only allow 3 minutes to look for a ball, there is a reason for this in being to help speed up play!

If you are booked and not going to play, please contact the pro-shop so adjustments to the start are made. This occurred on Saturday, players being late and not turning up causing some chaos (as did the frost) in the later tee times. With pressure on tee times it is important to book in. There are often slots available at late notice, or you can contact the Pro Shop to go on the wait list, if you can play on a Saturday at short notice. It is a requirement of the conditions of play on a Saturday that the competition of the day must be entered from 7:30am.

Due to full fields it’s important to be on time, not just to be considerate to your group who you are booked with, but also to those players behind.

Please accept the fact that there are days where there are delays and hold ups on holes, and a round may take 4 ½+ hours but please enjoy your golf – for some people it’s the only day they can play.

The club championships have reached the semifinal stage in all grades; the finals are to be played next week. For those of you who entered the stampede to book a tee time for Saturday 26/09, you would have noticed several slots blocked for the club championships. The final for the Men's senior and intermediate and Ladies Silver and Bronze A divisions is played over 36 holes, consequently there are 3 morning tees blocked for this. The Ladies Bronze B and Men's Junior A and B grades are over 18 holes and tee off mid-morning.

It looks as though this weekend’s forecast is fine with rain clearing to a fine day – enjoy your golf.

Pollock Cup Report – from Julie Jones

At Christchurch vs Pegasus 13th Sept.

The team got off to a good start and were keeping in touch over the first 9 against a very strong Pegasus team. There were some great matches and although we had a 6/0 loss, the end score does not show how much the Harewood Girls made sure Pegasus had to work hard to get their wins.

Our next game is at Waitikiri on the 27th, playing the host team.

Blank Cup Report - from Phil Barlow

The Blank squad had their closest set of matches yet this year against Avondale at home.

This time however we came out on top with a 4 1/2 - 3 1/2 win. All matches were within 1-2 up or down for the whole game, however in the end we prevailed.

While Russley and Clearwater are easily heading the pack, it is fierce competition below those 2 teams with finals spots clearly still up for grabs.

We are currently mid pack along with Templeton and Christchurch and so hoping for favourable results in the upcoming rounds to get ahead of them in the effort to get to finals day.

Woodward Cup Report – from Gavin O’Hara

Round 5 – Harewood v Waitikiri

The Woody team heading to Waitikiri for a tough 5 round match against Waitikiri at their home track.

The team were in confident mood with Josh Smith returning and the inform Harry Weeds the team was strong.

O’Hara and Weeds lead the team off, and it was not O’Hara’s finest day. O’Hara struggled off the tee all day (Snipes) and found himself in more trees off the tee than fairways and limped to a 5&4 loss to Simon Marshall. Weeds on the other hand, showed again this kid has game. Playing the experienced Geoff Rudduck Weeds shaped his ball around the tight Waitikiri layout and was never down and again secured a great point for the team with a 2&1 win. Kerry Branson playing number 6 had another solid performance against Chris Bond and bought a great point home for the team with a 2&1 victory. With James Howard going down 5&3 to Antony Dale, the match was poised at 2-2, and its was looking very tight and could go either way. Sam Watkinson playing 4, had a great battle with Canterbury Masters stalwart Brett Turner, and Watkinson unfortunately lost on the tough 18th, where he found himself short right of the green and Brett just short in 2, Watkinson played a lovely SW to around 8 feet, Turner tentatively putted up to 2 and a half feet short. Watkinson saw his par putt slid by, and Turner stepped up to nick the match 1up. In the same group, Josh (the bomber) Smith was in control of his match with 1 up with 1 to play, Smith played a solid 18th hole. With a bombing big drive down the right hand side, followed by a solid iron shot to the middle of the green, his opponent Woobong Kim needed to make birdie to nick a half, Smith rolled his birdie putt to the hole side, and Kim had no choice but to shake hands with Smith. So, with the matches at 3-3, McLean was wandering down the 18th hole already securing another point for the team by beating the Waitikiri number 1, the talented Kris O’Neil 2&1. McLean showed his class again coming down the stretch with a beautiful birdie on 16, followed by a lovely up and down, right on the 17th green on the short par 3 to shut the door on O’Neil. Manyweathers was played the inform and experienced Aaron Forsyth, trading birdies in a high-quality match. Manyweathers found himself in a real battle and another match was heading down the last hole where all the action was happening. Manyweathers found himself pin high right of the green for two, and Forsyth played another lovely iron shot 15 feet under the hole. Manyweathers pitched up well from a tough lie but was made to watch the hot Forsyth role in another birdie to win 1up. So a hard fought 4-4 draw moved Harewood back into the top 4, in fourth spot, and with a weekend off this coming weekend, the team move into the double header matches and push to try and secure a top 4 finish for finals day.
