Dear Guest, Friday, 04 June, 2021

Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

The storm that caused chaos to mid Canterbury has left the course relatively unaffected. A tree was lost on the boundary fence at the back of the 13th hole. The green keeping team were cleaning this up on Wednesday. The fairways now are wet and heavy, the greens are soft but with the sand base have drained well. There are some bare patches where grass has been lost over the dry conditions prior to the wet winter, please be careful walking on them. Please repair you divots and pitch marks as with the soft conditions there will be more of them!

Spare a thought for the members of Greendale and Hororata Golf Clubs. The damage caused by the Selwyn River flooding has left them with major clean ups and weeks at the least not being able to play on their respective courses. There is a link to make a donation to help Hororata in their clean up on the Golf NZ website (https://www.golf.co.nz/news-detail?newsarticleid=22840&tags=clubs). There is no news on a donation link for Greendale at present.

This weekend it is the first start of the two tee starts from 10.00am. There are 3 tee slots from 7.45 am to 8.00am. If you have booked into these slots it is on the proviso that if there is a frost and the course is closed for frost you will be unable to play. Next weekend is a Shotgun start from 11.30am. Entries are being taken by the Pro-shop.

The competition for this weekend is monthly medal (white tees) for the men and LGU for the ladies. This is a stroke round for both. A reminder in terms of the rules of the competition on Saturday (pg 8/9 in the programme book). A completed card must be handed into the Pro-shop for your score to count. Please do not complete your round electronically on the dot golf app.

Please help to add to the course entrance at the 10th Tee blocks by bringing a Hebe to add to the area for the planned planting or make a donation to the fund.

In spite of the weather last weekend there were a good number of players who managed to complete their round before the rain set in. The forecast for the weekend looks good for Saturday, OK for Sunday and maybe a jacket required for Monday!

Course Beautification – Donate a Hebe Month

In line with our work in making improvements to the gardens and the pathways, we would like to make the area in front of the toilet block (next to the practice green) our next project. It would be great to have input from the members and so we have decided to make the month of June…. Donate a Hebe month.

Simply buy/donate a hebe (approx. $15) and leave it next to the pro shop. Colin will collect and look after them until the end of the month when a working bee will plant them all out in the area near the sand bucket stand & bin, as you walk off 18 green. This area is currently just a sand hill, scruffy in appearance and not an attractive entrance way to No 10 tee… it needs our attention!

New soil will be needed and the current old growth removed, you may have noticed this work has begun. Please donate a Hebe, of any description, leave it beside the Pro shop and a group of volunteers will take care of the rest.

We thank you in anticipation of another positive project by keen Harewood members ??

Thank you!

Debbie Scott - Chair Course Committee

Mens Senior Interclub Trials on Sunday June 6th

Unlike last Sunday the forecast is OK for this Sunday so for those players registered please arrive ready to tee up from 9:30am.

If you have registered interest and can’t make it this Sunday we will be in touch about practice matches being scheduled before the August start.

AGM 2021 & Election of Officers

The Board have set the date for the Club’s 65th AGM as Thursday July 15th at 7:00pm in the Clubhouse.

Nominations of members willing to act as officers or members of the Board are sought, with two positions for Director being available, one for President and one for Club Captain. Nominations should be lodged with the General Manager 28 clear days before the date of the Annual General Meeting, this date being June 17th. A complete list of all nominated members, the positions for which they have been nominated, together with the names of their respective proposers and seconders will be posted in the Clubhouse by June 21st.

The Notice of AGM and the Nomination Form are attached and on the main notice board in the Clubhouse foyer. The various AGM documents will also be uploaded to our website under the Membership menu.

Winter 2-Tee Starts from Tomorrow

As you all know from Doug’s reports and the programme, the 2-tee start begins tomorrow.

For those that have been kind enough to stand aside and give priority to those who can only play Saturdays, I would like to thank you and to also encourage you to check the tee sheets on Friday’s anyway as there may still be gaps for a variety of reasons or late cancellations.

A reminder there is the new Sunday comp as well which might appeal.

Course Care – Especially in Winter

It is really disappointing to have to raise this subject yet again but unrepaired fairway divots and pitch marks on the greens continue to be at an unacceptable level.

This cannot be blamed solely on visitors/green fee players and there are also many members who aren’t carrying sand buckets on course.

We are very fortunate to be playing so quickly after the recent heavy rains and flooding, and with the softer ground it is even more important that we protect the course over Winter.

Please remind those in your 4 of these requirements if you notice they are not being followed.

Thanks.

Course Rating – A Fascinating Insight

Our Greenkeeping 2IC Chris Clarke and I had the pleasure of learning more about the dark art of golf course rating.

The 1 & ½ day course was led by Golf NZ’s Handicapping & Golf Services Manager Phil Aickin and local rating guru John Thompson. It’s fair to say there is significantly more to the science than we imagined, and you certainly couldn’t learn it all in that limited period of time.

I recommend you have a look at this video which summarises the course rating process nicely –

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UHQlHVUQbA

The Canterbury Course Rating Committee could certainly do with more help so if you are interested in learning more about how you can help, please let me know and I will put you in touch.

Akaroa Golf Club – Centenary Celebration Registrations

Akaroa Golf Club will be celebrating 100 years in April 2022 and they have asked us to circulate the attached flyer to try and capture any past members of the club.
