A great day for golf was experienced by a pretty full field last Saturday with over 190 players teeing off in the sunshine. There were some men and women pushing hard to make the club champs match play rounds along with a large field of men playing Stableford and ladies playing LGU and Putting competitions. As of Tuesday this week, Club Champs qualifying has now completed and we move into the match play rounds this coming weekend. All qualifiers should have received an email/app notification of tee times by now and the sheets for all grades are now in the Pro Shop to view. Note that this year there will be a plate competition for those who lose in the first round of match play for both Men’s and Women’s match play so please be aware for the following weekend tee times.

Please call the Pro Shop if you are unsure whether you have made it or not prior to Saturday morning.

Placing, Flags and other information

A reminder that we are still at Level 2 this weekend, so the same rules apply as last weekend. Please do not remove flags at any stage of your round. Rakes are in bunkers, and toilets, ball washers and water fountains will be back in use.

Placing is 15cm (6 inches) on fairways as it was last week. Please check with your playing partners if the line between fairway and first cut of rough is hard to see. Check your scorecard for local rules.

Please also remember to fill your divots and any others you walk past and fix all of the pitch marks you see on greens. It doesn’t just have to be your own that you repair.

Having trouble two putting from long range?

Most golfers put all of their attention on the line of a long putt. Try this: Have two rehearsal strokes looking at the hole, feeling the distance, then select your line and trust the feel of what you have just rehearsed.

Simon Cup – from Guy Chambers

The team had a better result on Sunday... we have points on the board with a draw against Avondale at Clearwater. Terry Coleman went down the last to go down 1 down, Dave White lost 3 and 2, Conrad Harle had a good 2 and 1 win and Matt Capill held on to win 1 up. Kerry Lake lost 2 and 1, Otis Holland (still only 14 years old) had a good win 4 and 3, Ray Coleman lost 2 and 1 and I had a cheeky 1 up win (was 3 down with 4 to play) to secure the draw. This Sunday will be a tough match with Russley at Russley.

Blank Cup – from Neville Bamford

Round 2 saw the guys take on Avondale in the morning and Pegasus in the afternoon. It’s fair to say we slept pretty well Sunday night! The top of the order played well with wins to Troy Clark 3&2, Jason Strachan 4&2 and Cameron Giddens 1up. Further wins to debutant Aidan Christie 1up playing at no.6, a half to Colin Posa at no.7 and a 2&1 win for Phil Barlow at no.8 saw us secure a comfortable 5 ½ to 2 ½ victory over a strong Avondale side. The afternoon vs Pegasus was a bit of a knee trembler with the result being decided on the last green of the last match. Wins to Phil Barlow 5&3, Colin Posa 2up, myself 5&4 and Brad Edmonston 1up, plus a valuable half to Cam Giddens saw us home 4 ½ to 3 ½. We are currently joint leaders with Templeton with 3 wins but there’s a long way to go. Next round is at Templeton on Sept 26^th, another 36-hole day!

Woodward Cup - from Gavin O’Hara

The team heading over to Bottle Lack for a double header round under level 2 conditions. First up was a strong Russley side who we have struggled against in recent times…

Leading the team off was Gavin O’Hara and Harry Weeds. O’Hara came up against Canterbury Masters stalwart Andrew Dufton, O’Hara was involved in a dig-dong battle and was all square through 13 holes. O’Hara then lost 2 of the next 3 holes, leaving him dormy 2 down. With a great birdie on the downhill par 3 16^th, O’Hara took Dufton up the last, but unfortunately couldn’t better the par made by Dufton to lose 2 down. Weeds on the other hand was playing a solid round of golf and put his opponent under constant pressure and had a good lead early in the match and kept the solid play going and shook hands with Jake Roberts 6&5 for Harewood’s first point of the morning session. In matches 6 & 5 Kerry Branson was up against the solid Owen Burgess and a big welcome back to the side with the return of Daniel Lundt who was in battle with Michael McAuley. Both matches were very close but the boys unfortunately came out on the wrong side of their results, 1 down and 2&1 respectably. Matches 4 & 3 saw Sam Watkinson and Josh Smith up against Regan Kilpatrick and Dominic Brettkelly. Watkinson displayed his battling qualities again with a hard fort halve a point for the team. Smith who was playing with an arm/shoulder injury battled hard against Dominic but unfortunately the injury was affecting his game and he battled to a lost 1 down. Our top 2 pairing for the morning round was Matt Mclean and Scott Manyweathers who had tough matches on their hands against Reid Hilton and Ben Baker. Matt had Findley O’Hara on the bag all day, but unfortunately couldn’t bring a point home for the team and lost 2 down and Manyweathers played solid and bought home his 1^st point of the season, however the boys came out the wrong side of a close encounter with a 5.5 – 2.5 defeat.

The afternoon round the captain freshened up the side and bought in Anuresh Chandra and Ryan Barham for the battle against a confident Avondale who had just beaten Christchurch in the morning 7.5 – 0.5. The team got off to a great start with most of the matches Harewood were up early, however as the afternoon unfolded things started to get tight… With early points in the bag early and with big wins from Anuresh (5&3) Dan Lundt (5&4) and Sam winning (3&2) and a great fight back from Harry Weeds who was 3 down with 5 to play and grabbing a massive half a point for the team, the match result was coming down to the final 2 matches. With the tie in the balance at 3.5 (Harewood) 2.5 (Avondale) the stage was set with everyone watching the final two matches. Matt Mclean was all square with 1 to play and Scott Manyweathers was 1 down with 1 to play. The stage was set with the boys playing their final hole the Par 5 9^th … Dean Harvey had the honour and hit a good tee shot down the left-hand side, Mclean hit a quick one left and caught the tree and left himself way back. Manyweathers and Sam Purdon both hit good tee shots down the middle. Mclean hit a really good lay-up shot to around 105 meters from the green., With all the other 3 hitting their second shots all just short and around the green, Mclean was ready to go, and pulled out the wedge from his caddie Fin and hit a stunning wedge shot to a back right flag to about 3 foot right of the hole... a wonderful shot and a key time and game himself the opportunity he needed to win the point the team. Manyweathers had a good opportunity for birdie which just passed the hole for him to half the hole and lose one down, and with Matt’s opponent Dean Harvey failing to get up and down from the front on the green, the stage was set for Mclean to step up and role in the 3-footer for the win and for Harewood to win 4.5 to 3.5 and secure 2 points from a long day of golf. Harewood now sit 4^th in the table 2 points from the top spot currently held by Pegasus.

Next double header round is at Waitikiri where the team play Bottle Lake and Clearwater…
