As all of those who played would have been aware, last weekend was “Holey Greens” stableford due to coring of the greens taking place during the week. There were some great results from the day as we have come to expect for holey greens. Well done to all those below.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell

Advice for long bunker shots (20 to 40 metres)

My advice for long bunker shots is to use a Gap Wedge or your Pitching Wedge if you don't have a steep lip. Open the face a little and play it the same way as you would with your sand wedge. The advantage of doing this is it's a lot easier to get the distance because the loft is less so you don't have to hit the shot really hard to get the distance.

Catering Over Long Weekend

The caterers will be here nice and early tomorrow for the double-shotgun so allow a bit more time and enjoy the special promotion of a breakfast knot plus espresso coffee for only $10! They will be open from 7:00am and the breakfast special will run through until the afternoon field has teed off. Sunday will be open as normal but bookings are very light on Monday, so the Clubhouse won’t be open for catering and bar on Labour Day.

Board Resignation – Gavin O’Hara

Members are advised that, for a variety of personal reasons Gavin has resigned from the Board and the Club earlier this week. Gavin was elected to the Board in 2019 and re-elected in July of this year. He has also been player-manager for our Woodward Cup team for the past three seasons. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Gav for his time and efforts whilst a member at Harewood.

New Paths

The asphalt contractors were able to complete holes 1,7 & 9 last week with holes 4 & 10 scheduled to be completed on Tuesday Nov 2^nd and Wednesday 3^rd. There may be some disruption whilst they undertake this work so please bear with us during these times. The remaining holes to be asphalted will be in 12 months’ time but work on the Amuri Chip paths will be ongoing as resources allow.

Armstrong Motor Group Twilight Series 2 2021

The 2^nd series of 2021 Twilight start next Tuesday October 26^th with a multi-tee start at 6pm. The details are the same as in previous series with it being a 6-week series, a $10 entry fee for all players, 4 from 6 scores counting towards series prizes, weekly prizes and catering and bar being available. Bookings will be essential as will be limited to 48 players each week on one of our 9’s.

Pro Shop News

The Pro shop will be running a 6-week promotion on the driving range Monday to Friday from 5pm to 6.30pm – buy one get one free. We have advertised via our social media channels so please share and promote to friends, family and colleagues.

Also, with the shop now on Summer hours we advise members that the last 18 hole cart hire is at 2:30pm, and the last 9 hole hire is 4:30pm.

Senior Men’s Interclub – Manager’s Reports

Simon Cup

The team played Waimairi Beach at Templeton last Sunday and was on the wrong side of a 5 to 3 game loss. There were good wins for Otis Holland (4&2), Ross Fowler (2&1) and Terry Coleman (2&1).

Blank Cup – from Neville Bamford

The team were in 5^th place ahead of our game vs Waimairi Beach last Sunday at Clearwater and we needed a win to have a decent chance of reaching finals day. Playing at no.1 Cam Giddens came up against the very experienced ex-Canterbury player Jordan Bakermans and he battled to a 6&4 loss. Further losses to Jason Strachan (5&4), Brad Edmonston (4&3), Benji Lapslie (4&3) and Colin Posa (5&4) saw the team limp to a 5&3 defeat. After some indifferent form it was good to see Troy Clarke win 1Up and yours truly come back from 4 down after 6 holes to also win 1Up, with Phil Barlow continuing his solid Blank form this season for a win 2Up. We now sit 5^th equal and have a mathematical chance of top 4 in the last round on Sunday 31^st at Christchurch vs leaders Russley but we would need to win by some margin and others ahead lose. It’s always nice to beat Russley so we won’t die wondering!

Woodward Cup - from Gavin O’Hara

The team headed over to a sunny but blustery Avondale GC for our final 2 rounds of Woodward Cup matches against Weedons and a strong Pegasus side with an outside chance of qualifying for the top 4 and the semis.

First up was Weedons who were facing a relegation playoff if they didn’t pick up any points. Leading the team off was Ryan Barham who was up against Keith Mills. Ryno battled hard and took Mills down the last hole, only to lose 1 down. Kerry Branson on the other hand, who knows the Dale like the back of his hand, made easy work of Andrew Wylie running out a 4&3 winner. In form Sam Watkinson put Jack Ryder to the sword with a comprehensive 8&6 win, which allowed him to go and caddie for Daniel Lundt who was in a tough battle with Canterbury Master Jonny Stieller. In match 3, Harry Weeds was putting on a clinic with his woods, against Brad Nightingale. Nightingale came out of the traps really hot and threw birdies at Weeds on the front 9, until Weeds then settled into his round, and from around the turn every time Weeds had a wood in his hands, he just kept flagging it and won 6 holes in a row to run out a 3&2 winner. His playing partner Gavin O’Hara was up against the old wily Fox, Peter Fox, and they had a great tussle, O’Hara was struggling to find fairways in the windy conditions, but his wedge was more than making up for it, and was Speith-like, frustrating Fox, and racking up 5 birdies in his round on holes 14, 17, 1 ,4, 5 and closing the match out 3&2. The top pair of Matt Mclean and Scott Manyweathers had solid wins over Austin Hamilton and Hayden Clinton respectively. With 6 wins in, the team went over to support Dan Lundt who was all square going down his last hole (6^th), after playing his approach into the heart of the green, Stieller was long in 2 and with a difficult downhill chip and failing to get up and down, Lundt rolled his birdie putt up to the hole side for the hats to come off and shake hands for a 1up win over a very good match player in Stieller. A Harewood win 7-1.

As the team headed back to the club house for a spot of well-deserved lunch, we heard Russley had won their morning match which meant Harewood’s fate was sealed with regards to qualification for finals day.

Still, the team remained in buoyant mood, and were looking forward to the challenge in the afternoon against Pegasus. As the winds got up Ryan Barham again lead the team off against Chris Posa (son of Colin). Ryan had a close match all day and held a 1up lead going down his last hole (13^th) only to lose that hole but he picked up a massive half point for the team. His playing partner Manu, (Scott Manyweathers) was up against Peter Brinsdon who had not lost a match all season. With a new putter in the bag Manyweathers played a tremendous round of golf to inflict Peter’s first defeat of the season. The dynamic duo of Dan Lundt and Sam Watkinson again didn’t disappoint, with wonderful wins over James Cadenhead and Marcus Mariu respectively. Weeds and O’Hara were also playing together again, against tough opponents in Shaun Allan and Phil Stephens. O’Hara was entertaining the 4 ball (and Shaun’s wife) with some outrageous play. On the 17^th hole, O’Hara from a good drive, had 70 yards into the green and proceeded to shank his Sand Wedge approach out of bounds, but got a huge bounce of the neighbours tin shed, back in bounds, and then from there, O’Hara hit a 40 yard pitch from the rough, downwind, downhill with spin, adjacent to the hole side for the putt to be conceded and a par to half the hole, with steam coming out of his opponent ears. A couple of holes before that, on the long and difficult par 3 15th, Shaun hit his 3 wood long and left from the tee. O’Hara nearly hit his tee shot into the neighbours gardens on the right, found his ball in deep rough, hacked it out about 50 yards down the fairway, and with O’Hara still to play, hit another wonderful 40 yard pitch stiff, only to then stand there and watch his opponent chip on the green and 3 putt, and for O’Hara to win the hole.. hehehe….O’Hara didn’t have all his game in the arvo and ended up losing 3&2. Weeds lost by the same margin. The stage was set for the titanic match between Matt Mclean & Kazuma Kabori. Mclean had to be very patient after watch Kazuma chip in 3 times early on, but Mclean stayed patient and played lovely golf getting up in his match around the turn, and closed his match out on the par 5 11^th with a birdie and a 2 & 1 win. Kerry Branson was up against Zach May and took Zach to the 17^th hole and a great effort only to lose 3&1, but a fantastic win for Harewood 4.5 – 3.5.

For the second year running we lost out on qualifying for the finals on number of games, and was pipped to 4^th spot by Clearwater.

A big thank you to my team this year, you all played your hearts out and it has been a pleasure being your manager over the past 3 years and just want to say goodbye to you and the Harewood members and look forward in meeting on the fairways someday soon, as I am moving to Clearwater for the foreseeable future.
