A great golfing day greeted those who played last weekend on Saturday with a quieter field taking part in Ashby Mugs (combined stableford) for the men and a stableford day for the women players.
The men’s results were:
- Conor Clarke and Blair Hooper (75 pts)
- Peter Larkin and Kevin Pritchard (75 pts)
- Brad Edmonston and Sammy Hosseini (74 pts)
- Michael Streeter and Johnny Sharland (74 pts)
- Phil Barlow and Sam Watkinson (71 pts)
The women’s results were:
- Jung Hee Kim (39 pts)

Congratulations to all winners.
This weekend sees the semi-finals for the men’s cups and plate rounds – good luck to all players in making the finals. The rest of the men have a stroke competition. The ladies have a combined stableford competition.
Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
Learn to stop 3 putting by practising the right way
Next time you’re on the practice putting green, stand in the middle with four balls and putt to four different holes ranging in distance from eight to fifteen metres. The goal is to two putt them all for the par score of eight.
This sounds really easy but will take some practise to achieve, especially when the greens are back to normal speed.
Enjoy your golf!
HGC and Vaccination Policy
Just a quick comment on behalf of the Board about the situation with the Club potentially moving towards a “Vaccination Only” policy under the Government’s new COVID-19 Protection Framework. This would entail all staff, members and visitors to the Club providing evidence that they are fully vaccinated. Clearly there is a lot to play out still about how this may be implemented and managed but already the Royal Auckland and the Grange Golf Club have moved to this policy as of November 1st. Indications are from industry surveys that 95%+ of NZ golf clubs will implement some form of vaccination policy once the Government announce more details and then guidance is issued by Golf NZ. We will await further movement and advice on this before communicating with members further.
New Asphalt Paths
The contractors have today finished holes 4 & 10 so this completes the paths being done in asphalt this year with holes 12, 14, 15 & 18 to be asphalted next year. Holes 3, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15 & 17 will have Amuri Chip paths over the next 12 months as resources allow.
Armstrong Motor Group Twilight Series 2 2021
The 2nd night of 2021 Twilight Series 2 saw a new record of 53 players take on the back 9 in cool conditions. The ladies division was again a close-run affair with Jo McNicholl’s 21 points winning on countback over Catherine Butts and Victoria Webb-Smart pipping Amelia Ching for 3rd on countback also, both on 20. NTP wasn’t needed on #15 so rolls over next week. On the men’s side the scoring was amazing with newcomer George Trower compiling 25 points over Nathan Harrison (24) and Aaron Columbus (22) on countback. NTP on #13 was our good friend Peter Ophuis. As per last week we will have the Clubhouse open right through for those who want to come out early, have a drink and some food whilst they watch the race around 5pm (maybe have a flutter also) and then tee up at 6pm. And don’t forget to book for Twilight.
Pro Shop News
The Pro shop will be running a 6-week promotion on the driving range Monday to Friday from 5pm to 6.30pm – buy one get one free. We have advertised via our social media channels so please share and promote to friends, family and colleagues.
Also, with the shop now on Summer hours we advise members that the last 18 hole cart hire is at 2:30pm, and the last 9 hole hire is 4:30pm.
Senior Men’s Interclub
Blank Cup – from Neville Bamford
At a very different looking Christchurch GC on Sunday the team needed a mathematical miracle to sneak into the finals and despite a great 4 ½ to 3 ½ win over leaders Russley it was a bridge too far and we finished joint 5th on points. Excellent 2 & 1 wins for Troy Clark, Cam Giddens and Phil Barlow and a 1Up win for Jason Strachan, plus the all-important half from Brad Edmonston saw us take the honours. Reflecting on the season, we just didn’t win the matches that we should have particularly when we hosted the double round early October. Our more “mature” players lead the way with Club Captain Phil Barlow having a 6 win - 3 loss record and Colin Posa not far behind with 5 ½ wins. A big thanks to all the squad in 2021 and I know we are already looking forward to performing better in 2022.
