Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow
For the men not playing in Club Champs competitions it was the last stableford round to get a good score in for the Shootout this coming Sunday. It was a pretty wet start to the day that kept a few people at home in the dry, but it all started clearing up at about 12:30, so if you started later in the day, you would have had much better playing conditions tough quite humid. The women’s field was also reduced, however a few played in a stableford competition as well.
We have the Christmas Closing day shotgun start coming up on Sat Dec 18, so keep the date aside for a great day with fantastic prizes. There will be 2 competitions with one starting at 8:00am and the afternoon one at 12:30pm.

Missing Club Champs Cups

Sunday Shootout - 2021
With the Shootout now closed for the men and closing on 20th Nov for the women, if you entered, you should have an idea if you have made it or not. The ladies have their 19 qualifiers ready to go. If you are already inside the top 19, but are unable to make the shootout on 21 November, please contact the Pro Shop and advise them as soon as possible, as it may mean others may step up to fill the field.
On Sunday 21 November, the men will start the day on the 1st tee at 8:00am, followed by the women at 9:00am. Please be at the club at least 20 minutes prior to the tee off for instructions and rules for the day. Lunches will be provided to those left in the field at the start of the 10th hole.
Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
Speed on short putts
If you choose to putt four and five footers firm, in my mind you have one chance - it has to hit the middle of the hole. If you putt them at a nice holing speed you have three chances (i.e. left side middle and right side). Last Monday at Shirley Golf Club I played with Zach May, an up-and-coming golfer (18 years old). He shot 63 off the Black tee’s and putted beautifully and holed everything, but his holing speed was perfect all day.
Happy golfing.
Last word
Thanks to those who continue to fix the many pitch marks on our greens. Please make an effort to fix your own when they happen, and don’t be afraid to have a look around the green for any that have not been repaired and fix those as well while waiting to have your putt. Don’t forget to take a bucket of sand and fill the divots you create along the way as well.
Armstrong Motor Group Twilight Series 2 2021
Night 4 of 6 in the 2021 Twilight Series 2 was again very well supported with 54 players in attendance on a pretty blustery night that made good scoring difficult. In the ladies division Amelia Ching took top spot with a very honest 18 points, followed by Jo McNicholl (17) and Diane Deuart (15). NTP was again won by Jo on the difficult 13th. The men had Derek Watson win his 2nd from 4 with a well-compiled 20 points with Andrew Mackway-Jones (19) and Aaron Columbus (18 on c/b) taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. NTP on #15 went to Fraser Seddon. In terms of the overall Series where your best 4 scores count, Jo McNicholl (78) has a handy lead over Diane Deuart (70) and Catherine Butts (69). The men’s field is equally spread with Derek Watson on 79 leading Taylor Killick (74) and Nigel Paterson (72). Only 2 rounds to go so don’t forget to book in nice and early for Twilight night 5.

Simon Cup – Final Report
Our final game was against Christchurch at Waitikiri didn't start out the way I'd like as after trying to find an eighth player on Saturday (thanks Barry) to find out we were still 1 short on the day. We ended up bottom of the table after losing 6-2. Otis continued to impress with a 3 -2 win playing at one, Terry played well but went down 2-1, Doug went down 6/4 (his opponent chipped in twice ... one was for eagle), I managed a seesaw 1 up win, Dave and Kerry both had close games but lost 2/1 and 3/2 respectively. Barry came close to a magical half after being 5 down with 5 to go ended up losing 1 down. Thanks to all players for their support this year, results weren't the best but we had fun and were competitive. We look forward to a better year next year.
Thanks again to all players and supporters.
Cheers - Guy Chambers
