Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow

A warm and still day greeted players last Saturday and it definitely showed in the results as you can see. There were some fantastic results in the men’s Monthly Medal with Cameron Powell shooting a nett 63 in Division 1 to take out the Top Dog carpark until the next Monthly Medal is played in February. Shooting 2 below your handicap didn’t even give you a look in.

The women’s section of the club had their Saturday players closing day stableford with an afternoon tea after a group start.

Women’s results

  2. Sonia Brown (40 pts)

Shootout Sunday

Sunday saw the culmination of hard-fought rounds through the year with both men’s and women’s Shootout being played on Sunday by the top 19 players for each. A big thanks to Allprint for sponsoring first prize for both the men’s and women’s shootouts this year with the following to be enjoyed by the winners:

  • 2 nights at the Lake Tekapo Luxury Apartments with bubbles on arrival
  • Star gazing with Silver River Dark Sky for 2
  • 2 rounds of golf at Mackenzie Golf Club

The women’s winner was Ranee Morgan and the men’s was Patrick Guo after a hard fought day. A big thanks to all who volunteered to make the day smooth running and successful.

Closing Day shotgun

A reminder we have the Christmas Closing day shotgun start coming up on Sat Dec 18, so keep the date aside for a great day with fantastic prizes. There will be 2 competitions with one starting at 8:00am and the afternoon one at 12:30pm. Entries will be opening soon.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell

Change two things to hit the ball lower

Next time you’re hitting into a two-club wind and it’s an eight-iron distance, hit a six and make a three-quarter swing backswing and a three quarter follow through. By reducing the speed of your swing, it reduces the backspin on the ball, so it flies lower.

Happy golfing.

Last word

There have been murmurings of some players interpreting the rules of golf to suit themselves lately, so look out for upcoming “rules you should know” spots in the Woodlands Word. We will include commonly needed rules that need to be observed rather than just suiting yourself. If you need to have them at hand, the R&A rules are available to download for both iPhone and Android phones. There are also copies available from the club should you want a small booklet version. Please make yourself familiar with the day-to-day rules you need to know.

Armstrong Motor Group Twilight Series 2 2021

The penultimate night saw a record 57 entries on a very pleasant summer’s evening. The ladies division saw Catherine Butts (19) take out top prize with Mandy Walsh 2nd on countback over Amelia Ching, both on 17. The men was a close-run thing with the top 3 all on 21 points. On countback the winner was Nathan Harrison from Jason Blair and Tony Pole. In terms of the overall comp the top 3 men are Nathan Harrison on 80 with Derek Watson and Taylor Killick on 79. The ladies are a bit more spread with Jo McNicholl leading on 78 from Catherine Butts on 76 and Diane Deuart on 70. Just the one round to go to post a great score – make sure you book in for what looms as a great last night of twilight!

NZPGA Trainee Championship Raffle – Andrew Croxson

As part of Andrew’s Traineeship, he will be selling some raffle tickets for his end of year championship. Raffle tickets are $10 each and will be sold over the next 2 weeks in the Pro Shop. There are some great prizes to be won!

Friday Bookings

Just a reminder to members to please book your golf in rather than turning up expecting to get on the course. It is a busy time of year, particularly on a Friday with corporate golf days booked with the course closed in the afternoons for these. All players should check with the pro shop prior to commencing play as well.
