Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow
HGC easter shotgun (from Doug Claridge)
A good field of just under 90 golfers played the easter Shotgun Tournament. The greens had been rolled in the morning and with the strong NW wind and some challenging pin placements made the putting tough. Scoring was overall low, with most players less than 36 stableford points, bar a few of the winners! A big thank you to the Pro-shop team of Craig and Annabel who made the running of the day smooth.

Pro Tip by ‘Undercover Pro’ in Craig Mitchell’s absence
Golf is a game of balance. If you address the ball and your weight is more on your toes than your heels, move a little closer to the ball and transfer a little more weight on your heels. You will now complete your swing in balance and likely hit a straighter ball.
Rule of the week (Advice on the course - definition)
When playing a round of golf on a Saturday, there will often be comments like “What did you hit there”, or “Looks like a tough lie, I would…”. Pretty harmless, but when playing interclub match play or 4BBB finals, you can get pinged for it. See some examples of what is and isn’t considered advice and for more information, have a look here.
Advice includes:
Any verbal comment or action (such as showing what club was just used to make a stroke) that is intended to influence a player in:
- Choosing a club,
- Making a stroke, or
- Deciding how to play during a hole or round.
But advice does not include public information, such as:
- The location of things on the course such as the hole, the putting green, the fairway, penalty areas, bunkers, or another player’s ball,
- The distance from one point to another, or
- The Rules.
