Club Updates - Richard Attwood

Clubhouse and Course Development

We completed the movement of fill onto the course this week. Holes 9, 13 and 5 mounding has been completed and 4 is underway. Stump grinding has started and will be done intermittently over the next month.

It has been great to receive feedback from our members on the ongoing work completed over the last 5 weeks.

By the numbers:

  • 410 truck movements of fill.
  • 4,500 tonnes of fill moved onto the course.

Over the last couple of Saturdays, I have enjoyed walking the course with different groups as they play their rounds and getting to know some of our newer members. Thank you to all members who have been open to talk about the club and the work that has occurred to date.

Frost Policy

We thought it would be a good opportunity after last Saturdays frost to get everybody up to date with Harewood’s frost policy on Saturdays.

We begin our 2-tee starts (holes 1 & 10) from 10am to 12pm Saturday 8th June.  If there is no frost, we will start 6 groups, three off each tee 7.42, 7.49 and 7.56 on the understanding that the last group has teed off on their second 9 by 9.50am.

If we have a strong frost before then and as an example, we are delayed to a 9.30 start, those players booked before 9.30am will lose their tee times and the tee sheet will start from 9.30am.  The Proshop will delete the bookings and you will receive an email via dot golf so members will be aware that there is a frost at Harewood.

Kind regards

Club Captain Update – Phil Barlow

What a fantastic day to play golf last Saturday, and in fact over the whole weekend if you managed to get out on Sunday as well. A frosty start meant we all teed off from hole 10 to give the more sheltered first nine greens some breathing space. If you have ventured out on the course over the last week, you will have also seen the improvements of mounding taking place after the tree felling. A reminder to use common sense around GUR areas being the tracks and tree felled and mounding areas (see rule of the week below).

For the men members, we have the BCHP singles qualifying this weekend. A reminder that if you qualify in the top 16 any of any of the 4 grades, you will have Match play rounds from your current handicap. This starts in earnest after we go to dual tee starts for winter, so have a go as it’s a good way to get a guaranteed tee spot during the shorter days. It also leads in to and good practice for the Canterbury Senior Interclub season which starts in August, so have a think about whether you would like to have a shot at that as well if you are on about a 10 or less handicap – we are interested!

This Saturday sees the men playing BCHP qualifying while others play stroke, and the women have LGU Rnd 4, Putting, and Harewood Cup Rnd 2.

There were 18 x 2’s paying $16 each with Aidan Christie also having a 2 on the 4th hole. Nett Eagles was hole 15 with no winner, and so jackpots to for this weekend.

Pro Tip – Craig Mitchell

This week’s Pro Tip is about chipping in winter conditions.

Because the fringes are muddy and wet in winter, when the situation lets you, land the ball 2 metres on the green and let the ball run to the hole. By landing on the green you will get a much more consistent response.

Rule of the week – GUR and how to take relief

With many parts of the course in GUR currently, here is a reminder how you take GUR relief - refer Rule 16.1a. If your ball is in an area deemed as GUR, or your stance addressing your ball is in GUR, even if your ball itself is not in GUR, you must take relief. To take relief, place a tee at the point where your ball or feet are at the closest (not the nicest) point clear of the GUR. Then, take your drop within a club length outwards and perpendicular to the GUR, and around an arc backwards from direction of play until it is a club length backwards and parallel to the GUR.
