Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow

After a very humid, warm, and sometimes drizzly day last Saturday, the rain dancers have been in action this week to add to an already wet December. That means instead of getting out for some practice during the week, you could top up those Christmas presents with a few goodies from the Pro Shop. The forecast is to have the weather in a much better place for Saturday, so fingers crossed.

This Saturday has good sized fields signed up for both the morning and afternoon Closing Day shotgun competitions. Thanks to all who have entered for what should be a great day all around if the weather holds out.

Please also be aware of the clubs Covid policy if you haven’t played over the last couple of weeks since this was put in place. Entry to the club and course is only upon proof of double vaccination.

Last Saturday the ladies had the 2nd round of their Summer Cup (stableford), and the men played a best 3 of 4 per hole (stableford) competition.

Women’s results

  1. Julie Monk (36 pts)
  2. Jung Hee Kim (36 pts)
  3. Deb Wekking (35 pts)

Men’s results

  1. Alan Dickson, Jock McKay, Jeremy Guernsey, John McRae (129)
  2. Ruben Carson, Errol Hume, Doug Claridge, John Hamilton (128)
  3. Tony Carroll, Ryan Lee, Daniel Sullivan, Allan Double (126)

Upcoming Saturday golf

18 Dec – Closing Day Shotgun (morning and afternoon competitions). Ladies also Linney Trophy.

25 Dec – Christmas day – no competition

1 Jan – New Year’s Day – no competition

8 Jan – Summer Cups - Round 1 for men and Round 3 for women

Rule of the week

Rule 19.2 - Relief Options for Unplayable Ball in General Area

This is a rule that many players do not know very well, and on the official R&A website (www.randa.org) there are very good diagrams to help make the below very clear.

A player decides that his or her ball in a bush is unplayable. The player has three options, in each case adding one penalty stroke:

(1) The player may take stroke-and-distance relief by playing the original ball or another ball from a relief area based on where the previous stroke was made.

(2) The player may take back-on-the-line relief by dropping the original ball or another ball in a relief area based on a reference line going straight back from the hole through the spot of the original ball. There is no limit on how far back on the line the reference point may be. The relief area is one club-length from the reference point, is not nearer to the hole than the reference point and may be in any area of the course.

(3) The player may take lateral relief. The reference point is the spot of the original ball. The relief area is two club-lengths from the reference point, is not nearer to the hole than the reference point and may be in any area of the course.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell

Do you want to play well when the pressure is on?

All good players have a pre shot routine, so when the heat comes on they do things the same way. It can be a waggle, or some will kick their right knee in. It really doesn’t matter what it is, as long as you do the same thing on the range and the course, whether you’re going well or badly.

Enjoy your golf!
