Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge
It’s finals day for club champs this weekend. The damp and drizzly weather is set to clear tonight and allow a good day for golf. Well done to all the finalists in the men’s and ladies’ grades. Off early from 8 am are the 36-hole intermediate men, Silver women and the Bronze women. The Men Junior A and Junior B grades play from 11.00am. The Club Championship games take precedent on the course, so if you are caught by a club championship game, please let them through. The senior men’s match has been delayed by a week due to one of the finalist Scott Manyweathers representing Canterbury in the SI interprovincial match at Waitikiri this weekend. Men’s Finalists: Senior: Phil Barlow Vs Scott Manyweathers Intermediate: Guy Chambers Vs Ramon Coleman Junior A: Malcom Cameron Vs Peter Moore Junior B: Graeme Clarke Vs John McCrae Prizegiving for the club champs will be at the completion of the days golf between 5.30pm and 6 pm. There will be a BBQ run in the outdoor area by the caterers from around 4 pm. I am unable to play due to a work course commitment on the other side of town but will be there to present prizes. Those who aren’t playing in the club champs the match of the day is stableford in both grades. The Woodward Cup team have made the semifinal after having a win (against Weedons 5-3) and a loss against the top team Christchurch 5-3 in the final round of matches at Pegasus. They play the in the semifinals and hopefully the finals on the 10th of November at Templeton. The Blank team needed a win to advance to the semifinals but gained a ½ and were pipped at the post by Templeton who in securing an 8-0 win against Pegasus won the 4th spot by one game. The Ladies Pollock Cup team have secured 4th spot and play the semifinals at Templeton on the 10th of November. It would be great to see members out supporting our top golfers at Templeton on the 10th. Metro A and B are in action this weekend. Metro A visit the central city and play Hagley at Hagley, and Metro B have a trip to the seaside to play Waimairi at Waimairi Beach. Blank Cup Update - from Player/Captain Phil Barlow
The Blank team had their final round robin game against 2nd place Russley at Russley in the weekend. We needed a win to guarantee a finals spot or a half with another result in our favour a bit. With some tough fought matches, a half was secured, however Templeton beating Pegasus 8-0 meant we missed out on a finals spot by 1 game over the season. A tough pill to swallow, however the team can hold their heads high, as it was a well fought season with many ex Simon Cup players stepping up and being regulars. Personally, I would like to thank everyone who played for the Blank team for their efforts over the year, in particular the guys who stepped in when we were short. A great effort and great bunch of guys to manage. |

Woodward Cup Update – from player/manager Gavin O’Hara
The Woodward Cup team had their final 2 battles at Pegasus last weekend with an early start last Sunday. First up was Weedons where the team performed gallantly to bring home a 5-3 victory to secure our place in the top 4 of the round robin. Great wins form the engine room of Josh Smith, Scott Manyweathers and Daniel Lundt, and a first win of the season for Gavin O’Hara with a 7&6 victory, after being 5 under par gross after 8 holes and 8 up in his match. Fantastic halves from Ryan Barham and Sam Watkinson led the team to 5 points and that all important 2 points to secure 3rd spot in the table. The afternoon was the tougher test, playing the leaders of the round robin, Christchurch Golf Club. Again, the boys battled hard but unfortunately were on the wrong side of a 5-3 defeat. Fantastic wins in the afternoon from the battling engine room again, with Josh beating Richard Reed, Scott getting a great half against Mike Toeke, and a great 2up win for Jason Strachan. Another great half a point again from Sam Watkinson who very nearly beat Nick Kay, only for Nick to hole a 20-footer on the last hole with Sam in close for par to secure the half. Nick Kay won/shared the Stan Rich Salver after an unbeaten season, so hats off to a great performance from Watkinson. So, we go again in a months’ time with our semi-final against Russley at Templeton on the 10th November, and if successful we will face either Christchurch or Waitikiri in the final of the 2019 Woodward Cup. Be great to see some members come along to support the team if available on this big day of Canterbury golf as the team would really enjoy and appreciate seeing some known Harewood members cheering the team on! |

NZ's Top 50 Courses
In case you
missed it when announced, Harewood has been ranked no. 26 in New Zealand’s Top
50 Courses by NZ Golf Digest Magazine. There was a 47 strong judging panel that ranked courses on 7 criteria: Shot Values, Resistance to Scoring, Design Variety, Memorability, Aesthetics, Conditioning and Ambience. To give some local context, Terrace Downs was 46th, Russley 34th, Pegasus 28th, Clearwater 18th and Christchurch 15th. Given the superb condition of our course I reckon we’d be top 10 if they ranked us now! |
