Dear Guest, Friday, 20 December, 2019

Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

The festive season is upon us and the 2019 Harewood Golf Club season reached its conclusion for the year with the closing day Christmas Hamper shotgun last Saturday.

I want to say thank you who have offered advice, suggestions and encouragement to me over this year, and I hope that the golf season has been successful for all. I want to also thank the Christmas elves Annabel Chadwick and Christine Herd who helped in the organising of the prizes for Saturday’s successful Christmas Hamper Shotgun.

The golf competition now moves into the summer cup, and runs for the men and ladies to the 18th of January, and the season opens on the 25th of January.

Next year the Men’s Shootout has gained a sponsor; first prize is an accommodation package at the Peninsula Beachfront Resort in Mooloolaba for 4 persons, and the Shootout will be The Peninsular Beachfront Resort Men’s Shootout.

The Opening day shotgun will be on Saturday 1st of February at 12pm.

The Final Twilight Tuesday – Results from night 5 and Overall Winners

The final night of 2019 Twilight was touch and go due to the weather forecast but once the call was made we had 19 committed players brave the wet and windy conditions – a great effort by all!

Winners on the night were Tim Wenmoth on countback from Jamie Steel with 19 points and Catherine Butts with 21 points pipped 2nd placed Joy Lord with 20 points. NTP on #3 went to Steve Thomas with Joy Lord taking the honours on #6.

In terms of the overall winners (the best aggregate stablefords over a minimum of 3 rounds) we had a tie in the Men’s division on 63 points with David Ott winning on countback from Paul O’Neill with Tim Wenmoth 3rd. The Ladies division was a little more clear-cut with Catherine Butts on 61 points being 3 clear of Denise Guerin with Joy Lord a further 3 shots back in 3rd spot.

Well done to the winners and all participants over the 5 weeks - there were 60 players in total over the 5 weeks so a great start for the new Twilight comp.

Again, a big thanks for the generosity of Twilight Sponsor Tony Pole of Pole Electroplating and Nearest the Pin Sponsor Jamie Steel of Gateway Cargo whose support ensured we had a keenly fought, fun competition over the 5 weeks.

The 2020 series is scheduled to start on Tuesday February 11th and run for 8 weeks. Watch for further details of this in the New Year.

New Membership Committee – First Initiative

A new member committee has been formed comprised of GM Neville, board members Debbie Scott and Gavin O’Hara, and member Bruce Maetzig who Chairs the committee.

The brief is to focus on our membership; not only growing our numbers with new members but also existing member retention and overall member engagement and culture. The first initiative we wish to launch is a member gift voucher (copy attached), the details of which are below.

            · A gift voucher is available to every current member of the golf club regardless of category (see attached).

         · This voucher entitles members to bring a guest to play at Harewood at no charge, and includes a free bucket of range balls

            · The sole reason this gift voucher has been given to members is so they can show prospective members our course and facilities

            · Member or Guest to provide guests name, phone number and email address so future contact can be made with them

        · When possible, Neville or other club officials could meet the guest with a personal welcome

             · Contact the pro shop to redeem the voucher – a physical copy is not required.

Your ongoing support for this and other member initiatives is greatly appreciated.

Smoking Ban in Effect

Members are reminded that there is now a No Smoking rule in place on the course, practice area and driving range.

Canterbury Golf Referees Assn – 2020 Rules Seminars

The Canterbury Golf Referees Association is pleased to announce that it intends to conduct the following Rules Seminars during March / April – dates and venue to be advised.

They strongly encourage our club’s officers, committee members, club members and interclub players to attend these seminars. There will be two separate seminars.

Golf Rules Level 1

Content – 2 x 2-hour classroom sessions culminating in a 1-hour exam.

Golf Rules Level 2

Content – 3 x 2-hour classroom sessions, a 2-hour on course practical session and a 2-hour exam.

A prerequisite for the Level 2 is to complete the Level 1 course. A certificate showing this will be needed for entry to the Level 2 course.

They will advise further when the dates have been confirmed.

Christmas Message from the GM

It has been another solid year of progress at Harewood with lots of challenges both professionally and personally for me. I’m pleased to say that both the Club and I are in better health in more recent times!

We continue to operate with one eye on costs and the other on continual improvement – not always possible but I think we have all enjoyed our course this past year due to increased investment in the fairways in particular.

A huge thanks to all staff who continue to demonstrate a great passion for Harewood and the golfing product we deliver. Thanks also to the Board for their support and valuable time during the year.

I believe 2020 will be a significant and successful one for our Club and I look forward to working with all members to enhance our reputation as one of the leading Clubs in not only Canterbury but New Zealand.

A very happy, safe and relaxing holidays to all.
