Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

It was a successful opening day shotgun last Saturday. The forecast easterly wind made conditions for golf tough (well for me anyway!). It was a good field of just under 100 players for the opening day of our golf season.

Colin and his team have been busy working on the course in preparation for the Lamb and Hayward Canterbury Stroke Play tournament this weekend. The volunteer gardening team from the mid-week ladies have been busy weeding and tiding up the garden areas, which is making the course look great. If you are not aware, the course is closed this weekend due to the Canterbury Stroke Play event.

The golf programme gets into gear next weekend the 15th February with Men playing a monthly medal (black, blue, white tees) and the Ladies playing all irons stroke round or a bisque par. The Harewood 4 Ball Best Ball competition begins on the 22nd February, with the first round of qualifying for the Men (2 rounds qualifying, best round counts) and the qualifying round for the Ladies. The second round for the Men is Saturday 29th February.

Good luck to Scott Manyweathers, Kerry Branson, Gavin O’Hara, Daniel Lundt, Ben Allington and Matt McLean who tee off on Saturday morning for 54 holes in the Lamb and Hayward Canterbury Stroke play.

New 2020 Twilight Competition – Armstrong Motor Group Twilight Golf Series

The details for the all-new 2020 Armstrong Motor Group Twilight Golf Series starting Tuesday February 11th have been sent in a separate email.

Bookings essential please – see you Tuesday!

Danny O’Neill - Memorial Bench

Some of you will have noticed the new bench seat located behind the Men’s White Tee on #3.

Danny’s first and only Hole-in-One was here, and it is fitting that his family chose this spot to bury his ashes and have a permanent memorial for him.

Knowing Danny he’ll enjoy the wide variety of shots on display and say G’day next time you sit on him or are passing by ??

Pitch Marks

A reminder to members to please repair your pitch marks and any others you can see on the greens.

These have been quite bad of late and whilst it is difficult to identify any particular players or groups responsible, please remind your playing partners if they are prone to forgetting this basic courtesy.

Pro Shop & Car Park Security

We now have security cameras installed in and around the pro shop providing 24-hour surveillance, including the main car park and entrances to the greenkeeping area and practice green.

Signage has been ordered for installation in the next week or two.

2020 Golf Rules Seminars

Further to their earlier advice on rules courses for 2020, the Canterbury Golf Referees Assn are pleased to confirm that the dates and venue have now been finalised.

Flyers have been displayed on the main noticeboard and are attached. The flyers contain a link which enables members to register electronically.

The CGRA recommend that all golfers attend but especially those working on committees and players who are representing their club.

They are certain all those who attend will find the courses particularly useful.

She Loves Golf 6's Series

We are one of several Clubs who have agreed to host a new initiative; the She Loves Golf 6’s Series (promotional poster attached). The series aims to provide an on-course opportunity for women who are newer to golf.

Participating clubs and dates are;

      · Monday 17 February - Harewood

      · Tuesday 25 February - Rangiora

      · Tuesday 3 March - Russley

      · Tuesday 10 March – Waimairi Beach

      · Tuesday 17 March – Bottle Lake

      · Tuesday 24 March – Avondale

A summary of the details for She Loves Golf 6’s:

      · NZ Golf and Canterbury Golf to promote the 6’s series through websites, local databases, local councils and on social media. Participating clubs to promote series through members and on club social media platforms.

      · NZ Golf to manage the administration of registrations and enquiries.

      · Participants pay $10 entry fee at each event payable to the club on arrival.

      · 5:30-5:50pm tee off playing an Ambrose (It’s OKAY rules) over a 6-hole loop from the purple tees. No draw required as groups are formed as participants arrive.

      · Focus is on introducing women to playing golf on-course in a supported environment. Score is not really a priority according to previous feedback.

      · 3-5 volunteers required at each club to welcome the women and encourage/support the participants on course.

      · Entry fee includes nibbles (e.g. cheese platter) in the clubhouse after golf and women can purchase a drink at the bar/cafe.

      · If your club would like to promote a meal option which participants can order before starting play and pay for after golf, that may be of interest to participants.

      · Each club to provide information to participants about suitable follow-on opportunities for beginners at your club.
