Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

Another week, I hope all members are getting used to the new normal as I am in returning to work. Life in the post lockdown world does take a little bit of extra time to continue to practice safe social distancing. Please bear this in mind when in the pro shop. It is one place that it can become congested at the golf club.

The course continues to look in great condition, the greenkeeping staff had a smile on their faces for a brief while at the start of the week with the rain that fell. Unfortunately, Canterbury continues to be in a dry spell and the rain has been much needed. Conditions may have softened from the last few weeks of fairways with run since play resumed post lockdown.

The fields for Saturday golf have grown post lock down. There was 108 Men's players and 36 Ladies playing last Saturday. If your round was a little slower than normal, then that was probably the reason. The Course will be full again for Saturday, for the last 1 tee start before we move to a 2 tee start from 10:00am on the Saturday 6th June.

Please continue to carry a sand bucket, fill your divots or others and repair your pitch marks. It is a holiday weekend, so help keep the course looking in condition by doing your bit to keep it that way. If you have time on your hands come and join in the Garden tidy up that is organised for Wednesday 3rd of June at 9:30am by Julie Jones. The working bees on the gardens help make our course continue to look in tidy condition.

Course and Garden Working Bee - Wednesday June 3rd 9.30 am

Bring Hoes, rakes, buckets and if you have any bags for pinecones please. Ladies, we will be doing the gardens near 10, toilet block, Flagpole and Pro shop. Men will be doing another tidy up of pinecones and branches between the fairways. We have broken the back of pinecones over the last couple of working bees, but although they will never stop dropping, it should get easier. Feel free to attend to the gardens at your own leisure if you are not able to make it. It all helps to make our course more attractive.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Many thanks

Julie Jones.

Staff Resignation - Carl Brooking

Late last year Carl advised the Club of his plans to return to China with Zoe early March 2020.

The COVID situation obviously changed these plans and at Carl’s request in February we agreed to extend his resignation to 31 May. Carl still hopes to be able to complete the move in July/August but given the financial impact on the Club due to COVID we are unable to extend his employment further, so Sunday May 31st will be his last day on staff.

We have agreed that Carl can still conduct lessons here at Harewood (for members and non-members) and also continue to run the junior programme on a Sunday until he is able to depart.

I’d like to thank Carl for his efforts and enthusiasm whilst at Harewood, particularly with the Juniors and She Loves Golf initiatives that he has managed.

We look forward to seeing him around here until he heads to China.

Interclub – Woodward, Blank, Simon & Pollock Cups
We have received notices from Canterbury Golf about the conditions of play and entries for this year’s competitions which start in August.

We will have a registration noticeboard in the pro shop for players interested in representing the Club and further details including team managers and trials will be advised shortly.

For those who don’t know, Pollock Cup is the premier Women’s comp and men play for the Woodward, Blank & Simon Cups. As a guide the handicaps range in Woodward from around +5 to 2, Blank 2 to 7 and Simon 6 to 10, dependent on squad depths.

New John Deere Progator and Shrouded Boom Sprayer
Allow images
You may have seen on our Facebook that we took delivery of a new spray unit on Tuesday.

This new kit replaces our sprayer lost in the October fire and was fully funded by the insurance payout.

The shroud allows us to spray safely in windy conditions and if you see 3 smiling greenkeepers out on course you now know why!
