Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

It’s finals weekend for the Jennian Homes 4BBB competition for the men and ladies this weekend. Both finals are scheduled to tee off at the back of the field at 11.47 (Men) and 11.54 (Ladies). These are match play finals, so for those playing early off the 10th tees you may run into some traffic that may slow your pace of play up. Please be considerate to those playing the final of this competition. Prize giving for the finals will be at 5pm at the completion of play.

This week all men’s competitions are played off the yellow tees, in order to give the white tees a rest from the constant traffic. Men have a choice of competition, either a Bisque Par or All Irons (stroke). For clarification, a hybrid club is not considered an iron. Both competitions will count as for the Shootout. With the recent course re-ratings some players may have a surprise in seeing what your course handicap is off the yellow tees. Make your choice of what competition you enter your details in the card kiosk in the pro shop – you can only play in one competition. Ladies have an LGU competition this weekend.

It looks like the weather is going to be a bit better than last weekend with a morning frost forecast. Players who have booked prior to the 10.00am tee off may not be able to play due to the course being closed due to frost to protect the greens. This is the reason Harewood golf club has a 2 tee start from 10.00am for the 12 weeks of winter from the start of June to the end of August. Last weekend’s Metservice forecast of clearing in the afternoon did not eventuate – it turned into a grim thick drizzle for most of the day making scoring difficult.

AGM 2020

A very positive AGM was held on July 15th with 57 in attendance. Of special note was the appointment of a new patron David Shipley which was widely applauded, especially when he said he would shout the bar! Congratulations Dave and thank you for your continuing great support of Harewood. Other points of note are:

      - Subs will remain unchanged for the 2020/21 season

      - Phil Badger, Debbie Scott and Jamie Mountier re-elected to the Board

      - The reciprocal arrangements with Bottle Lake and Templeton won’t be renewed after 31 August. The existing deal with Waimairi Beach will continue and we have agreed terms with Waitikiri who will join the reciprocal arrangements from 1 September.

Course & Landscaping Improvements

You may have noticed quite a lot of activity and new plantings in and around the course of late.

The Course Committee plan has numerous short, medium and long-term improvements scheduled as time, resources and budget allows.

In the short-term we will see several areas where trees/shrubs have been removed with mounding and/or new plantings in replacement. Contractors have used an excavator to dig 1m tree pits in initially 20 locations around the course, mainly in the secondary rough areas.

The tree species chosen are the Acer Jeffers Maple which is a medium sized tree with a red leaf and the Shimidsu Sakura, a Japanese flowering cherry tree. These will bring some much needed colour to our course over time.

We have also commissioned a sketch-plan for the entrance and driveway which will improve greatly the first impressions of Harewood, and there is also a plan being drafted for the re-planting of the patio gardens.

NZ Golf Magazine – Top 40 Course Rankings

The latest rankings conducted during lockdown by a panel of 27 “experts” has Harewood at no.25.

These things are always pretty subjective but interesting to see Russley at 40, Pegasus at 24, Christchurch at 22, Terrace Downs (which isn’t even open) at 21 and Clearwater T19th.

The top 5 in order are Tara Iti 1st followed by Jacks Point, The Hills, Kinloch and Cape Kidknappers.

Woodward Cup – friendly results

Harewood invited Christchurch Golf Club’s Woodward Cup team over to Harewood last Sunday for a 10 v 10 friendly match against last year’s winners off the blue tee.

With two strong sides going head to head, I am pleased to say Harewood came out on top with a solid 7-3 win over the reigning champions.

Match results below

Match 1 – Matt McLean v Jordan Bakermans = 2&1 win for Matt

Match 2 – Josh Smith v Mike Toeke = 3&2 win for Josh

Match 3 – James Howard v Marcel Boet = 2up win for James

Match 4 – Scott Manyweathers v Richard Reed = 2up win for Scott

Match 5 – Rhian Hamilton v Nick Franzmann = Lost 3&1

Match 6 – Kerry Branson v Jason Sincock = 4&3 win for Kerry

Match 7 – Sam Watkinson v Finlay Jones = 1up win for Sam

Match 8 – Gavin O’Hara v John Rademakers = Lost 7&6

Match 9 – Daniel Lundt v James Simpson = 3&1 win for Daniel

Match 10 – Harry Weeds v James Pearson = Lost 2&1

A great effort by all the team and really promising for the Harewood Woodward Cup season ahead.

We have friendlies against Templeton and Russley before we get underway in the main event with starts on the 9th August at Pegasus.

Repairing Pitch Marks and Divots

The care of our course has been a hot topic for a few months now with many members voicing concern at the lack of care and attention to repair.

Whilst it is easy to blame visitors to our course I think recent events have demonstrated that members are not entirely blameless in this regard so hopefully the attached information and video links will encourage players to take responsibility for repair and keep playing partners on task also.

The following links have information and a video produced by the USGA relating to pitch mark repair and the 2nd link is about divot repair.

It is always preferred to replace the divot in the first instance and if that’s not possible then fill with sand mix.
