The weekend looks fine for the first round of the men’s club champs. The Intermediate, Junior A and B first round match play are played Saturday and next weekend is the second-round of these grades as well as the senior grade. The Intermediate and Junior A and B grades were well subscribed with around 25 to 30 entries in each grade. I am a little disappointed in the players who have withdrawn from club champs after qualifying. The dates of the first round (which was changed) and the further match play rounds have been well advertised, and withdraws once the qualifying has been completed and draw made means that someone misses out, and some players have a bye.
It was a busy day on the course last weekend, 194 players played last Saturday. It is good to see lots of new faces out on the course. For those who are new to the club please be aware that there is a requirement to enter the competition of the day to play on a Saturday. The programme is available to view on our website (the 2020 booklets have run out due to membership growth) and this allows members to see what the competition is being played each Saturday. At present the programme will not change to what is advertised as long as there are no further disruptions to golf due to New Zealand COVID 19 level status. There is a shotgun start scheduled for early October, this may need to be changed due to the limitations on gatherings at present. The competition of the day is open to all players who book a tee time from 7.00 am to 1.30 pm.
This weekend the men who are not playing in the club championships match play have a monthly medal off the Blue tees. The new course rating will allow those who have higher handicaps to gain some shots, it is also a shootout round as the men are all off the same tee. The Ladies have an LGU and club championship qualifying (round 2of 2).
Good luck to the Woodward Cup team who take on top of the table Russley at Christchurch, and the Blank Cup team who take on Christchurch at Russley.
If the greens are as quick as last week it will be interesting to see who’s turn it is in the greenkeeping staff to place the pins. The head greenkeeper placed that tough pin on hole 5. I am certain I am not the only one who putted off the green from just above the hole due to the speed of the greens!
