Dear Guest, Friday, 11 December, 2020

Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

Tis the season to be jolly – Christmas Hamper shotgun is this Saturday. It marks the end of the 2020 golf season. It is a normal shotgun entry fee of $15.00. This includes twos, net eagles, straightest drive and best gross in men and ladies’ grades. The fields look reasonably solid for both the morning and afternoon starts. Good luck to all players in the stableford competition.

The final competition of the year, the monthly medal final was completed last Saturday. The best nett winner over all won the Tekapo Luxury Apartments golf package. Congratulations to Wayne Coleman who won this prize. Thank you to Ray and Annette Tansey of Allprint for the generous donation of this prize.

The course is in great condition, however with the warm weather the rough is going to dry out. It will not be long until there is a total fire ban in Canterbury. The risk of a discarded cigarette butt causing a fire becomes a real issue. Having witnessed the previous fire on the plains course and the speed at which it moved across the course jumping across fairways through the pines was very scary. If you are going to smoke; don’t smoke in the dry rough, please do not discard your butts on the ground, manage them responsibly. It is more than likely a smoking ban will be in force over the summer months.

The 2021 golf season commences on the 23rd of January 2021 with the ladies opening day and a Par round for the men. Summer Cup is played for the December / January months which is best 3 of 4 rounds over the summer months.

I hope everyone has a good and safe festive season, enjoy your golf and holidays.

Armstrong Motor Group Twilight Series 2 2020 – Final Night 6

The final night of the AMG Twilight Series 2 was played in beautiful conditions with a record 52 players taking on the back 9.

Winners on the night in the women’s division were Jo McNicholl (19) with Lynley Gainsford 2nd on c/b and Amelia Ching 3rd also on c/b. NTP on #15 was also Lynley.

The Men’s division saw a clear winner in Peter Ophuis with a series-best 24 points over twilight debutant Rob Pentecost (21) on c/b over son-in-law Ben Halsey. NTP went to Tom Grimshaw.

In terms of the overall series winners, we already knew that Lydia Pomeroy and Nigel Paterson had unassailable leads with Lydia’s 91 points aggregate (22.75 points per round average) and Nigel’s 90 (22.5 average) being way too good so congrats to them both for very consistent campaigns.

Peter was able to leapfrog a few with his outstanding 24 points on finals night to take 2nd with 84 points aggregate and Ben Potter was steady every week to compile 80 aggregate and take 3rd place.

There was quite a gap back to 2nd in the ladies’ comp with Lynley Gainsford on 75 closely followed by 4 others on 74 – Jo McNicholl, Susan Lovett, Diane Deuart and Denise Guerin. An executive decision based on points on the last night saw Jo pip the others for 3rd spot.

A huge thanks to all that attended the series and there were many who played all 6 weeks. Of course, the biggest thanks goes to series sponsor Armstrong Motor Group whose support enables us to have such great series prizes and also Merivale Fresh Choice who provide such fantastic weekly meat trays and weekly vouchers.

The 2021 AMG Series 1 starts up on Tuesday Feb 9th for 6 weeks so I look forward to seeing many of you back doing battle then.
