Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

The 2020 golf season concluded with the Christmas Hamper Shotgun. I must thank all members this season who have contributed, played and enjoyed their golf this season. The closing day Christmas Hamper takes a bit to organise and I must thank Annabel Chadwick and Christine Herd for organising the hamper prizes. Craig, Andrew and Luke in the Proshop for the organising of the draw, results and for the prizegiving at the end of each competition.

Saturday golf now plays for the Summer Cup. For the men it is a best 3 of 4 rounds over the next 6 weeks. There are a couple of Saturdays falling on Boxing Day and the day after New Year’s Day where the course and Proshop will be open. For the Ladies Summer Cup is the best 3 of 6 stableford rounds over the period until the season recommences. For reference, competition golf on Saturday begins for the men on the 23rd January with a par round and for the ladies on the 30th of January. The programme for next year has been completed and is with the printers.

The course has dried out and is playing well. Colin and his team of Chris, Ramon and new apprentice Dylan thank you for producing a course that is in good condition and a pleasure to play.

Just a quick message from me in the last Woodlands Word for 2020 to thank all members, volunteers, staff and the Board for their help and support of the Club in 2020.

Little did we know when the year got underway what was in store for us and despite the turmoil of 2020 the Club is in good heart and trading very well.
 
Our course continues to grow its reputation as one of Christchurch’s best and the passion of Colin, Chris, Ray and newbie Dylan to deliver a great product is very evident week after week. It is very pleasing that we are able to fund course improvements in a number of areas and this will continue into 2021 along with some necessary off-course improvements also. We have a great team in Craig, Andrew and Luke delivering our members services through the pro shop and Martin continues to add significant value here in the office.
 
We are very blessed to have great Club Captains in Doug, Phil (VC), Robyn & Julie who are well supported by numerous others on a variety of committees. The positive culture in the Club has been added-to by the influx of new members since lockdown and I am sure this will continue to be the case moving forward.

I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable festive season and I look forward to another great year at Harewood in 2021.

Sir Bob Charles – “The Biography”

 We are pleased to support Sir Bob’s recent book launch via sales in the pro shop.

The book is retailing for $59.95 and there are also unique BC 1963 headcovers for $69.95 and caps for $39.95.
 
Have a look next week if you are in the pro shop – they would be great presents for Christmas!
 
Ray Blank Book – “A Son of Christchurch”

Some of you will be aware that Ray Blank was the creator of the original Harewood course and his history in golf and many other aspects of early Christchurch have been well documented in this book by Louise Deans, his granddaughter.

I will have a supply here for sale at $35 for those who may be interested in learning more about Ray and his influence in the education sector in Christchurch and the development of Harewood, Waimairi Beach, Bottle Lake and Waitikiri courses.
Longest Day Cancer Society Fundraising Challenge

We are pleased to be a supporter of the annual Cancer Society Fundraiser “The Longest Day Challenge” where teams play 72 holes (4 rounds) in a single day. We have 4 teams booked in so far and more are to come so I will post links to their respective fundraising pages over the coming weeks.

Clubhouse Christmas & New Year Opening & Closing Hours

I have agreed with our caterers Tasteful Affairs that the Clubhouse will be closed on the following dates. These dates are subject to possible change where tee bookings are strong and the pro shop will liaise with the caterers in this regard.

The pro shop will only be closed on Christmas Day.

Closed - December 25 & 26 (open 27th)

Open – December 27, 28, 29 & 30

Closed – December 31 & January 1 (open 2nd)

Open – January 2nd onwards
