Weekly Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

Welcome to the 2021 golf season. The Summer Cup has been well supported over the December / January period. The course has dried out, and over the summer months it has been busy. Placing on all fairways has been put back onto the card. This is to protect some of the busy areas of the fairways, and not penalize golfers who hit a good drive and end up on a bare patch or a patch of high use with lots of divots. With the extra use of the course over the summer break, the number of divots being unreplaced and unfilled has been noticeable. Please as members fill and replace your divot, or someone else’s who has been lazy in not replacing theirs. To do this, you need to carry a sand bucket!

The Mens 2021 Saturday golf season begins this weekend. It is a par round and the first round of the shootout for those who enter it. The shootout is a competition that runs all season, your best 6 stableford rounds count. The shootout runs alongside all Saturday competitions provided that the field is off the same tee, however match play events do not count. If you are in the top 19 players in the field in mid-November and you compete in the Shootout Sunday. This year once you have paid your $50.00 entry fee only then will your rounds count for the shootout. There will be a closing date for entry to the Shootout in Mid-March.

Saturday 6th of February is the Opening day shotgun mixed stableford. There will be a start at 8am, and at 12.30 pm for a stableford competition. The Pro shop will be taking entries in the next week. Start looking for a partner for the Harewood 4 ball best ball - qualifying is the 18th of February.

Programme books are available in the Pro shop or office, or the programme can be accessed online in the club events tab in the Harewood Golf club website. The programme book outlines what competitions are to be played over the golf season and when and may help in making planning your golf. There have been some minor tweaks in the programme from last years’ interrupted season. A reminder that a condition when playing on a Saturday between 7am -2pm is that the match entry fee is required to be paid to play in the competition times.

Well done to the winners of the summer cup days, and of those who have scored well in their 3 combined rounds over the summer. The results are up on the results board outside the pro shop or online on the HGC website.

Happy golfing this season!

Used Clubs Required in the Pro Shop

We are needing to replace some hire sets in the pro shop and also acquire a number of Driver’s for hire on the driving range.

If you have a spare set and bag lying around at home that you no longer need then please contact Craig in the first instance. The clubs need to be of a fairly high standard for hire purposes so please don’t be offended if we politely say “no thanks”, and both left and right-handed and men’s and ladies clubs are required.

We are particularly keen to secure the driving range Drivers (left & right) as the current stock is low and as you can imagine they get quite a hammering! The quality of this stock doesn’t need to be as high so get Craig to have a look at anything you may have.

Many thanks.

Twilight 2021

The Armstrong Motor Group Twilight comp returns with Series 1 commencing on Tuesday February 9th.

It’s a 6-week series which means the last night will be Tuesday March 16th. All competition details remain the same with weekly prizes and overall series winners based on a minimum of 4 rounds.

Again, bookings are essential as we do have a limit to how many we can get on one 9 each week. Refer to the attached or website for full details.

I look forward to hosting another great series on Tuesday’s.

Neville

New Greenkeepers Shed

Progress is finally being made on the new 180sqm shed with the groundwork complete ready for boxing and foundations.

The boys are looking forward to the new space and having equipment under cover before winter.

Ray Blank Book – “A Son of Christchurch”

Some of you will be aware that Ray Blank was the creator of the original Harewood course and his history in golf and many other aspects of early Christchurch have been well documented in this book by Louise Deans, his granddaughter.

I have a supply here in the office for sale at $35 for those who may be interested in learning more about Ray and his influence in the education sector in Christchurch and the development of Harewood, Waimairi Beach, Bottle Lake and Waitikiri courses.
