Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

Sunscreen and water will be required for golf on Saturday, the forecast is looking fine and sunny for both days over the weekend. The field for Saturday is full with qualifying for the Harewood 4BBB for both the men and women on Saturday. When I checked online when writing this there were only 7 available slots left on Saturday. With a full field please be considerate to the players in front and behind you. Ready golf is the order of the day, be ready to play your shot when it is your turn. Qualifying in both grades is a best combined nett with 16 pairs qualifying in the women’s and 32 pairs to qualify in the men’s grade. The men have a second round of qualifying next weekend with the best nett in either round to qualify. It is match play off current handicaps (lowest player off scratch) for the subsequent knockout rounds.

It was good to play off a different tee last weekend. The change of course rating when golf moved to the world handicapping system is a much fairer shift in handicap when playing on the different tees. The playing of monthly medal and other competition rounds means the white tees get a rest and are allowed to recover. Personally, I think we have 4 different tee blocks and we should use them to enjoy the different course the other tees give us. At this time of year when there is plenty of run the longer course(s) becomes a little friendlier. The next monthly medal on the 6th of March for the men will be off the black tees, with the first round of the Harewood 4BBB competition scheduled for the 13th of March for men and women.

The Men’s shootout entries close the 6th of March. Your shootout rounds only count once the entry fee is paid. At present there is a strong field – 80, all trying to make the final 19 in November!

Armstrong Motor Group Twilight 2021 – Night 2

The 2nd night of the Armstrong Motor Group Twilight comp Series 1 on Tuesday night saw 45 players take on the demanding back 9.

Annette Pringle made it back-to-back wins with an impressive 23 points in the Ladies division with a countback required to separate Barbara Ford and Amelia Ching, both on 20. NTP will be keenly sought-after next week as no-one managed to hit the difficult 13th green on the night.

On the men’s side we had a clear winner with Jason Blair compiling 22 points on the night from Tony Carroll (20) and Sam Grimshaw on countback with 19. NTP on #15 went to Peter Ophuis.
A big thanks to Merivale FreshChoice for their magnificent meat tray raffles each week as well.

A reminder that players need to enter 4 scores during the 6-week series to be eligible for the overall series prizes on March 16th.

Please book in early as we do have a limit to how many we can get on one 9 each week. And more importantly if you book and then can’t make it please advise the pro shop as we may have a wait list.

COVID 19 – Alert Levels

As if we needed reminding of what extraordinary times we now live in, Sunday night’s announcement that we were moving to L2 on Monday was quite sobering.

My thanks to course staff who got organised quickly with the changes required before play commenced on Monday.

Whilst we are now back again in L1 it is a timely reminder of how fragile our freedoms are and how important it is that we demonstrate best practice here at the Club.

Please continue to practice good hygiene through hand washing and use of the free sanitiser; contact trace using the QR codes on display and if you are feeling unwell please stay home.
