It’s a mixed forecast for the weekend, a strong nor’easter with possible showers is forecast. It could make it a tough day on the course with the monthly medal for the men and the LGU for the ladies. It is a split tee monthly medal with div 1 off black tees, div II of blues and the higher handicaps off the white tees. In selecting the grades for monthly medals, I try and make the numbers in each grade relatively even, so the prize monies are shared. If you are under a 10 handicap you make the Div. I field, 10 to 14-15 handicap places you in the Div. II field and the others make up the Div. III. The winners of each monthly medal go into the monthly medal finals day in December. It is a stroke round, so play the hole out, and hit a provisional ball if you think you are in trouble.
The course conditions have changed, the fairways have softened and the generous run that we get in summer has reduced. It was noticeable playing over Easter how the fairways gave softened. With softer fairways come more divots. I filled a lot of divots playing in the middle of the week from players who have been too lazy to fill their divots and too lazy to pick up and replace the turf from their divots. I think this comes from the course being busy over the Easter weekend. The moral of the story – carry a sand bucket and fill your divots and others. There are plenty places to refill your sand bucket at holes 3, 7, 10 and 15!
Good luck on Sunday to both the Metro A and B teams who play in semi-finals in the Canterbury Golf Metro interclub competition. The Metro B team take on Russley at Templeton, and the Metro A team also take on Russley at Christchurch. I am sure these will be tight matches to make the finals played on the 18th.
