Weekly Update – Club Captain Phil Barlow

Club Champs contenders and a full field of members were greeted by a cool, windy day that ended with drizzle. Not what we wanted for Club Day Saturday golf. That aside, as usual there were some good performances on the day.

Interclub golf took place again the weekend past with varying results for our senior teams. Simon played their last round with Woodward and Blank teams still with one more double round just over a week away. The Pollock team had a bye and have their last round just over a week away as well. We are not having a good season this year with none of our teams in the top half of the competition. See the managers reports below for details.

The Club Champs reached their climax on Saturday with key results as follows.

Women

  • Silver:                    Kathryn Maloney won over Lynn Brand
  • Bronze A:             Janet O’Brien won over Valerie Wood
  • Bronze B:             Marguerite Leitch won over Linley Trapp

Men

  • Senior:                  Kerry Branson won over Scott Manyweathers
  • Intermediate:    Andy Lee won over Glyn Francis
  • Junior A:              Ming Peng won over Paul O’Neill
  • Junior B:               Jacky Zhang won over Daniel Sullivan

Congratulations to all the winners and well done to the runners-up for reaching the final. There were some very close matches on a day with quite tough conditions. The women’s cups and plates will all be presented on their prizegiving day with the men’s being presented after the afternoon closing day shotgun. This will allow for engraving to be completed.

This weekend is Monthly Medal for the men off the blue tees, and 4BBB for the women.

Interclub Update

Woodward Cup

The Royal Weedons greeted the players with daylight saving a few early starts for the lads.

First up Templeton Josh Smith, Harry Weeds had tough match with Dan Laughton and David Zohrab both being well under par. James losing to inform Ryan Bellamy. Scott had a good win and Dan Lundt beating Jordan latter on the last. Cam, Ryan, Kerry all going down the last hole. Unfortunately needing to win the last hole, we only 1/2 point from these two games 5 half 2 half lost to Templeton.

In the Afternoon, Josh had a great win at 1. Dan lost on the last hole, James never really got going down 2 and 1 , Scott went full bottle job 2up with 4 to go losing 1dwn a painful watch. Kerry losing to Richard 4n3, Ryan had a great win 8/6. Harry Weeds had his first win. Well done sir. Cam had a good win 4n3 4 all half with Avondale.

Blank Cup

The 2nd double header for Blank was at Russley this week. The course was in “interesting” condition with sprayed greens and tee blocks with many fairways also scarified. The surprise came when everyone was playing a couple of holes on the way to their tee when the irrigation went on as well. The team wanted to get a win under its belt after a tough season and were rewarded with a 5-3 win over Avonhead. A real mixed bag of results with some big wins to go with some tough losses and a couple of close ones. After a break, we were out against Hororata where the games were much closer with a lot of swapping of leads along the way. Unfortunately, we came up short with a 3-5 loss to them. The last 2 rounds for us will be just over a week away at Avondale where we come up against Templeton and Pegasus. No finals for us this year which is a shame with them being at Harewood this year.

Simon Cup

The last weekend of round robin games for the Simon Cup competition was held at Avondale golf club.  With daylight saving starting the 8.30 start felt like 7.30 am! Conditions were hard and fast with lots of bounce and run on the fairway and quick greens. Harewood were up against a strong Waitikiri side. Our season’s run of close results continued going down 5 / 3. Good wins at the top of the order from Kerry Lake (2 &1) and Paul McCormick (2 up ) and Toby Milne ( 1 up) , unfortunately the rest of the team were unable to get a win to haul us off the bottom of the table.  The final round for the Simon cup competition before it moves into semifinals is at Harewood this Sunday, for which we have the bye.

Thank you to all the players who represented Harewood this season. We were competitive and had a few results not go our way.  Hopefully next season we can improve on this year’s results.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell

Change two things to hit the ball lower

Next time you’re hitting into a two-club wind and it’s an 8-iron distance – hit a six and make a three-quarter swing backswing and a three-quarter follow through. By reducing the speed of your swing, it reduces the backspin on the ball, so it flies lower.

Rule of the week (Playing a Round – Stroke play Rule 5.2 b)

Stroke Play

On the day of a stroke-play competition:

  • A player must not practise on the course before a round, except that the player may practise putting or chipping on or near his or her first teeing area and practise on any practice area.
  • A player may practise on the course after completing play of his or her final round for that day.

9 Hole Ladies Results – from Lisa Neho-Smith

We had a lovely still day for the finals of the 9 Hole Ladies Club Championship.

Our winner is Sylvia Strong and runner up is Susie Walker.

The finals of the Plate was also played, with Jenny Treleaven as winner and Val Hampton as Runner up. The Stanley Cup was played a few weeks ago, and the winner was Lesley Compton and the runner up was Sian Bliss.

A Huge congratulations to all the ladies.

Club Life

Just a reminder that the week of 10th October we have our coring week, so no play will be occurring. It will be a great opportunity to play at another club around Canterbury during this time.

A BIG thank you to all those who have dug deep and found unwanted golf balls, we have had a great response so far. It is never too late to drop off those spare golf balls taking up space in your golf bags to the Pro Shop.
