Weekly Update – Phil Barlow

It’s great to see the course being so fully utilised over summer. We have the most members we have had for some time, so to all of you that have joined over the past couple of months, welcome to the best course and practice facilities in Canterbury. Of course, these numbers put a great deal of pressure on all parts of the course, so let’s all remember to be vigilant in filling divots and repairing pitch marks in the greens so they are left in the same condition you found them. The course is in great condition for this time of year, so let’s keep it that way.

A wee reminder that if you wish to play in any of the major club competitions in a cart, you will need to have a doctor’s certificate presented prior to playing. If you cannot present one, you will not be eligible. This applies particularly to 4BBB, BCHP, and Club Champs competitions. If you are unsure, the Pro Shop should be able to help.

Remember Twilight starts again next Tuesday. You will need to be in quick to book a tee slot, so contact the Pro Shop if you are keen.

This year’s programme book is now available in the Pro Shop, so make sure you get one to stay in touch with what is happening and when.

Summer Cup has finished for the year for both women and men with some very strong scoring throughout. Congratulations to the winners as below with countbacks everywhere.

New R & A golf rules for 2023

There are new rules in place for 2023 that you will need to be aware of, in particular the players who take part in interclub. Golf NZ will not be issuing hard copy booklets as they did with the last update, instead you will need to download an app for your phone. The club will have a hard copy full set of rules at hand should the need arise. When you look for the app, remember that we play to the R & A rules, not USGA. You can download a digital version of the rules here https://www.randa.org/en/articles/r-a-and-usga-announce-2023-rules-of-golf-update, where some of the updates are also explained.

Centenary Opening Day Shotgun – Feb 4

A reminder that the first event flying the flag of our centenary year is the Opening Day Shotgun tournaments. Get your names in ASAP so as to not miss out. As usual we will be having 8am morning and 12:30pm afternoon competitions. These will both be $20 entry fee with $5 going towards costs for the centenary events that are upcoming.

The afternoon shotgun will have a BBQ dinner post completion and prizegiving at a cost of $20 per person. You are encouraged to come along even if you played in the morning and to bring along partners. We will be asking for bookings for the BBQ ahead of time to help with catering. There will be a jukebox during dinner to provide some music in the background.

The afternoon field will have a cut-off of 100 players to ensure a prompt round of golf so make sure you get in as soon as places open.

Matchplay Pairs.

42 players entered the inaugural Matchplay Pairs competition back in October. The final four game down to the 18th green with Eric Wilson and Reeves Nesbitt prevailing by one hole over Dennis Morgan and Kevin Stuart. Congratulations to Eric and Reeves and enjoy your trips to Avondale. It was a competition that engaged most of the members and one to be repeated later this year.

At the stage we would like to thank Richard, Craig, the match committee and our sponsors in allowing us to run this event for Scotty.

There has been excellent support for this event and we thank you for this.

The Purpose of Scotty’s Fundraiser

The purpose of this golf fundraiser is that Scott Mackenzie has Motor Neurone disease. It is a condition that progressively damages parts of the nervous system, this in turn leads to muscle weakness, often with visible wasting.

Scotty was diagnosed mid last year in having this disease. Some may recall that when you played with him, he often suffered from cramps during his round in his legs and this was the beginning of his journey with Motor Neurones Disease. Scotty now lives in Tapawera (Nelson) with Heather and James. Being close to family in Nelson, plays a huge role in supporting him personally and to his immediate family.

Scotty is no longer working and will soon require a wheelchair to maintain a degree of independence. From this you can see how quickly this disease is progressing. Just recently, Scotty conveyed to Brian & Harvey that one of his hopes on his ‘Bucket List’ was to take a rail trip from Greymouth to Christchurch, Christchurch to Picton, across on the ferry to Wellington, then Wellington to Auckland. Money raised from this fundraiser would pay for the rail trip, accommodation, ferry, airfares, transport and meals for two.

Scotty joined Harewood Golf Course in 1999. He was a member of the Match Committee till 2009 and then became Club Captain 2009/10 season. He also played for the President and Metro Teams during his time at Harewood. He was Intermediate Club Champion in 2016. Some might remember his wife Heather, who ran a refreshment cart when we had the Plains Course, serving drinks and food to all.

So together you can see that these two have had huge impact on many and we would like to take this opportunity with your support to ‘Pay it Forward’ in recognising Scotty’s wish to take this special, meaningful rail trip for himself and Heather.

Should you have any queries regarding the above, please do not hesitate to contact either of us. We will update all with progress regarding the above, within the following two weeks.

Many thanks, Brian & Harvey.
