Weekly Update – Phil Barlow

Opening day for 2023 certainly had the heat turned up with a temperature pushing 35 degrees mid-afternoon. It would be fair to say it was a bit of a struggle for some, however an enjoyable round was still had by most. With a couple of tournaments on close by and being a long weekend, our numbers were a little down to what we have had in recent years. It was great however to see many stay behind or come along for a meal and a drink to celebrate the start of this important year for our club. Celebratory centenary shirts are available in the pro Shop for purchase.

Golf rules courses

Canterbury Golf is running Levels 1 & 2 rules courses again this year during March and April and are being held at the Papanui library. Please contact Bruce Grant at Canterbury Golf on 022 422 7251 or contact Richard at our office if you are interested in finding out more.

Reminders

First up - remember that this year’s programme book is now available in the Pro Shop, so make sure you get one to stay in touch with what is happening and when.

The annual Allprint Shootout competitions are now on for both men and women. You have a few weeks still available to enter before we cut it off for the year mid-March with the Shootout played in November.

A couple of things to keep our course in great condition.

  • Please take sand buckets with you, no matter whether playing a competition round, after work, practice round etc.
  • Please fill your divots after playing a shot. Put the divot back on the hole then fill the holes and cover in with sand for best uptake.
  • Fix all pitch marks – whether yours or one you see from a player ahead of you.

Twilight is on again on Tuesday, don’t forget to get your names down each week.

New R & A golf rules for 2023

For the next couple of Woodlands Words, we thought we would bring to you some of the updates that are now in play as of the start of 2023.

Back-on-the-Line Relief Procedure: The back-on-the-line relief procedure, often used for penalty area and unplayable ball relief, has been simplified so that the player now drops their ball on the line, and the ball must come to rest within one club-length of where it is dropped. The ball does not have to move backward or sideways as part of the drop, as long as it is no closer to the pin than where you picked the ball up from.

Upcoming Saturday golf (for full details refer to the 2023 programme – out soon).

11 Feb – Men: Monthly Medal (Blue tees). Women: Jean Tench All Irons Stroke, others Strokeplay.

18 Feb – Men: Harewood 4BBB Qualifying Rnd 1 (best 1 of 2), others Strokeplay. Women: Harewood 4BBB Qualifying, others Combined Stableford.

25 Feb – Men: Harewood 4BBB Qualifying Rnd 2 (bestv 1 of 2), others Stableford. Women: Centenary FMS Stableford Rd 1.

4 Mar – Men: Monthly Medal – Black, Blue and White tees. Women: LGU Rnd 2, Eclectic Rnd 2, Putting, Paterson Salver Rnd 1 Homelinks, National Teams event.

Enjoy your golf.

Today the club hosted the More FM crew for Gary McCormick’s last day. 18 years ago, Gary was welcomed to the show by flying him into Harewood. Today he was flown out of the Harewood Golf Club, thanks to Christchurch Helicopters.
