Weekly Update – Club Captain Phil Barlow

With great weather and the course holding up very well, if you could read a line for a putt, you could score well, and this was reflected in the outstanding scores once again. Saturday completed the qualifying for the men’s 4BBB with the women’s already completed. Please have a look in the Pro Shop or the online results if you are unclear whether you have qualified or not. The Pro Shop will book you in on the day with the opposition you have drawn. If you need to change the tee time allocated on any round or wish to play your match on a different day, please contact Craig at the Pro Shop as soon as possible. If you cannot complete your round prior to the following round, you will be disqualified.

Note that if you are in the upcoming 4BBB match play, your score will not count towards a Shootout round.

Allprint Shootout

Some fantastic scores being posted in the Allprint Shootout for this year so far. If you want to take advantage of the great conditions to post some scores, but have yet to enter, you only have a couple of weeks left to do so, as entries will close on 18 March. Check the box when you are getting your card to be in. Finals for the women will be 29 October and men on 26 November.

A course note for the week: Please do not throw the flag onto the green, hit the green with your putter, or do anything else that may damage it. Our greens staff put a lot of effort into preparing the course for us, so it is our responsibility to pay them back by respecting our course.

This weekend sees the men playing 3 tees Monthly Medal with the women playing LGU Rnd 2, Eclectic Rnd 2, Putting, Paterson Salver Rnd 1 Homelinks, National Teams event.

A reminder that we have a parallel fundraiser running this saturday for Scott McKenzie. The prizegiving for those who have entered will follow the Club Day prizegiving. It is a surprise, but he is coming down and will be out on the course in a cart, so if you know him, do say Hi.

Lastly some good advice, as passed in from Graeme Clarke as posted in the Listener.
‘If you’re older and want to find an exercise to improve your health, golf is probably better than simply walking or Nordic walking, according to a small study published in the ‘BMJ’. Finnish researchers studied 25 healthy golfers over 65, comparing the effects of an 18-hole round of golf, 6km of walking, and 6km of Nordic walking on blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. While all the exercises were good for the heart, golf seemed to be the best, despite being a lower-intensity exercise.’
So the answer is – get out there and play more golf!

We had a hole in 1 on the 15th last week. Congratulations to Peter Batchelor

Rule of the week (Rule: 15.2a - Relief from movable obstruction)

This week’s rule is Part 1 of the above. Click the link to read more.

Removal of Movable Obstruction. Without penalty, a player may remove a movable obstruction anywhere on or off the course and may do so in any way. An example of this might be the stakes holding up the rope at the back of the 8th green. Of course, remember to replace the stake after your shot.

But there are two exceptions:

Exception 1 – Tee-Markers Must Not Be Moved When Ball Will Be Played from Teeing Area (see Rules 6.2b(4) and 8.1a(1)).

Exception 2 – Restrictions on Deliberately Removing Movable Obstruction to Affect a Ball in Motion (see Rule 11.3).

If a player’s ball moves while they are removing a movable obstruction:

  • There is no penalty, and
  • The ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated) (see Rule 14.2).

Pro Tip of the week - Craig Mitchell

Bunker Play

Next time you have a green-side bunker shot and the sand is wet and firm – Square the club face so the leading edge of your sand iron can now dig into the sand but do everything else the same.

The softer the sand the more you open the face so you can use the bounce of the club.
