Centenary Celebrations Update – Debbie Scott

We are on track for a great celebration in October. We do hope you have managed to book yourself in for some part of the weekend. Friday is Cocktails – Canapes & Conversations with Saturday being Golf and Gala Dinner. With just 20 places left for the dinner you would be wise to register your interest now to avoid missing out! Golf registrations will be out soon.

We need your help! Please inform any past members or staff you may be in contact with, about our celebrations & direct them to our registration page or the office. I know many would be keen to catch up on the Friday evening.

We are having an auction on the Friday too, so if you had a quality item to donate, please let Matt O’Carroll or Lorraine Bamford know, or the office.

Weekly Update – By Club Captain Phil Barlow

We certainly were treated to what could only be described a spring golf day with a cool, cloudless sky with only a gentle zephyr last Saturday. Some great “winter” golf was played by many with some respectable scoring.

The last of the BCHP finals were played with Bill Wekking defeating Mitch Holland 4/2 in the Captains grade.

The men’s Club Champs qualifying starts this weekend and continues for the 2 weeks following. A reminder that Shootout is suspended for those 3 weekends for the men.

The ladies have an entry sheet for club champs qualifying up in the changing room, so please put your names up there if you are interested.

The Canterbury men’s interclub season starts this weekend with the top 3 grades (Woodward Cup, Blank Cup and Simon Cup) underway on Sunday. We have teams in all 3 grades, so if you are interested in seeing how some of our players fare against other Canterbury clubs, have a look on the Canterbury Golf website for details. The women’s Pollock cup team kicks off their season the following weekend.

This weekend’s competition for men: Club Champs Rnd 1, others Stableford and for women: LGU Rnd 7, Putting, Paterson Salver Rnd 3.

Two’s last Saturday earned $25 each. Nett Eagles was hole 12 and the $201 jackpot was won by Phil Barlow.

Pro Tip of the week – Craig Mitchell

This week’s tip is a very easy one and will help if you can do it.

When you have a short putt one of the best things you can do is - keep your head still and hear the ball go into the hole.

Rule of the week – Signing an incorrect card

For those that watched the Evian ladies major last week, you will be aware that Carlotta Ciganda was disqualified from the tournament after her 2nd round for signing an incorrect card. She was penalised 2 shots for slow play on the 18th hole but refused to acknowledge the penalty and add the 2 shots onto her card. She signed it without the penalty and therefore disqualified.

While we are very unlikely to have such penalties dished out (you are more likely to be asked to walk a hole), it is a reminder to check your card before signing it, as you may be disqualified from any competition or tournament if you do sign an incorrect card.

Thursday, August 3rd. Combined Stableford

A cold grey start discouraged some men and all of the Ladies from playing. In the end, they all missed a very good day for golf.

1st    Patrick Guo & Chris Straker                     70 points

2nd   David Williams-Jones & Jacky Zhang     64 points

3rd    Dennis Morgan & Simon Hubble            64 points

For wider interest, a quarter of the MWM completed the St. Johns First Aid course on CPR and use of the Defibrillator in the clubhouse after play. This, and an earlier initiative to collect and hold Emergency Contacts in an obvious place for most of the regular players, seems the sort of sensible moves that we would encourage other playing groups to follow. If nothing else, make sure that every playing group has a phone to hand to summon help to an accident or medical emergency.
