Weekly Update – Phil Barlow

The weather beat us last Saturday for the Centenary Shotgun with the competition abandoned at about the halfway point due to the high-speed winds that battered us all. Many stayed behind and had a bite to eat and a drink, but sadly it was a tough start to an important day for us. The Match committee will advise of a new date for a re-run of the competition soon. Those that turned up and paid will have first option for the new date. It was disappointing to see so many who had registered not turn up nor advise the Pro Shop that they were no longer playing. Please advise the Pro Shop as soon as possible if you cannot make a commitment as there are reserve players wishing to play for most events.

This Saturday’s competition is the Cancer Charities best 3 of 4 teams Stableford. Note this is different to the programme, this is instead of a shotgun. It is the best 3 stableford points of the 4 players for each hole.

Note that the women’s closing date has been amended and different to the published programme. It will now be on 25 Nov from 11:33am, changed from 18 Nov. As expected from this, the currently blocked out women’s tee slots in the morning and afternoon will be freed up for any men to use.

Pro Tip of the week – Craig Mitchell

Next time you’re going to the range to hit a bucket of balls do this… go to the putting green and do some short game work first then hit the bucket of balls second because all of us have the best of intensions of doing this after the bucket of balls but it never happens.

Upcoming Saturday golf (for full details refer to the 2023 programme).

21 Oct – Cancer Charities best 3 of 4 teams Stableford. Note this is different to the programme, this is instead of a shotgun.

28 Oct – Men: Ashby Mugs – combined Stableford. Women: 4BBB.

29 Oct – Women’s AllPrint Shootout.

4 Nov – Men: Monthly Medal (Blue tees). Women: International Stableford.

11 Nov – Men: Stableford (AllPrint Shootout closes). Women: Irish Stableford.

18 Nov – Men: Blind Pairs 4BBB stroke. Women: TBC (was closing day)

25 Nov – Men: Irish Stableford. Women: Closing day Stableford, Josie Dwight Trophy, Prizegiving.

Enjoy your golf.

Coring Week

Although the course has been closed for maintenance work, we have had a big week at the club. The Greenkeepers have a done a great job ensuring the course was ready to open today. We had a great group of volunteers on Wednesday to clean the course of all the debris from the weekend’s high winds and a group of volunteers were in again on Thursday to mark out the carpark.

When you are approaching Hole 13 you will see the initial work on the mounding behind the green and is still ongoing as I write this.

A big thank you to the staff and volunteers who have been part of this week and ensuring we have a good run into the summer months!

Clothing Sale

For those who want a bargain the Pro Shop Team have an apparel rack with 30% off, so make sure you go and check out the deals on offer.

Centenary Weekend

We will have a full report of the weekend in the next Woodlands Word but see below some of the photos from the Gala Dinner, a great night was had by all.

We have decided to keep the history wall created by Gary Charmley up in the Clubhouse, it is in the south room, or for some, the old games room. It is worth the read!
