Weekly Update - By Club Captain Phil Barlow

There is nothing like the Rugby World Cup to put some gaps into the tee times for a Saturday morning, and I’m sure everyone would agree it was worth watching before heading to the course. It was also great to have only a gentle zephyr of wind and cloudy skies to make the temperature a nice one for a round. The newly maintained greens made it a bit tricky on some putts but it’s all part of making our greens some of the best for the rest of the year.

The Cancer Charities collection was about $140 combined, so thanks to those who donated. The funds will be forwarded on appropriately. I did forget to mention that it was pink and blue theme in Woodlands Word last week, however Kim Dale didn’t fail to disappoint, as he does each year, with an outstanding pink outfit – well done Kim.

This week’s competition is Ashby Mugs for the men (combined Stableford pairs) and 4BBB for the women. The women’s Allprint Shootout is on this Sunday at 10:30am from the 10th tee.

Go the All Blacks!

There were 17 2’s last Saturday earning $12 each, and the Nett eagles hole was #5 and was not struck, so jackpots.

Pro Tip of the week – Craig Mitchell

Long-range putting

Never think about how hard to hit a long-range putt – have a practise stroke looking at the hole and try to feel the distances in your rehearsal stroke, then aim and trust your feel.

Rule of the week

Ground under repair (GUR) – rules and relief

With parts of our course under GUR at the moment, this is a timely article regarding what is deemed GUR and how to take relief.

In essence, ground under repair is an area on the golf course considered unfit for play. A player can drop out of this area with no penalty. It is often, but not always marked with a white line, and many of ours are not marked while the works take place.

To take relief, you must take the nearest point of relief (stance) and one club length. Make sure you drop the ball no closer to the hole. The ball must be dropped from knee-height.

For more info, click on the link above for a straight forward explanation for all GUR scenarios.
