Weekly Update - By Club Captain Phil Barlow

The sun was out, the fairways running nicely, and the wind stayed away. What more could you ask for on a Saturday It was a little cooler after the snow down south, and the field a bit smaller with a number of members away, but that didn’t stop some great scoring.

The women’s Allprint Shootout was on Sunday with Helen McKay taking it out on the day with Carey Fletcher taking runner up - congratulations Helen. A smaller field this year with the competition starting on the 10th hole. However, the weather held up and all looked to be enjoying the day.

Interclub report

A reminder that on 12 November the men’s interclub finals will take place at Pegasus with our two top men’s teams playing. If you can make it out there to support them in their quest, please go along and enjoy some great competition golf. Semi-finals start at 8:00am.

Presidents grade update – by Tony Marriner

Prezzies (Dad’s Army) 5th Round vs Waitikiri.

Sunday 29th at Waitikiri, a sunny day, with a more than blustery nor easter. The course was dry, with plenty of run, the greens been recently cored and were very slow paced.

We had mixed results, the team going down 4 ½ to 3 ½. Gary G, Jock M. John Y, all had a win. Dean G halved, with Tony M, Tim W, Gill H, all having a wee loss.

The match again, played in great spirits against the Waitikiri Lads. Next match, round 6 on 12th Nov vs Waimairi Beach, at Waimaire Beach.

Rules of golf (https://www.randa.org/en/rog/the-rules-of-golf)

As mentioned, a few Woodlands Word emails back, the first rule of golf is to learn the rules of golf. This is particularly important when you are a regular player, and even more so when playing on club day or in competitions of any sort. Unfortunately, we had to disqualify 2 players last weekend because they failed to meet some of the rules of golf. Cards were not signed by both players, the “X’s” on the left of the card did not match the score on the card, and in a pair’s competition, there should be a record of both players scores on each card. Remember also not to take digital cards on a Saturday competition. Our club rules are to fill out a printed card correctly.

Another point that was picked up multiple times last Saturday is that placing is only on mown fairways. You may not place your ball in the rough, or improve its lie, and if you lose your ball, you will need to go back to where you last played from unless it is in a hazard and an entry line into the hazard is agreed with your opposition. We also do not play the out of bounds (OB) rule where if the ball is hit OB, you can place another on the fairway at the exit site and then play your 4th shot. You must play a provisional from where the last shot was played if unsure.

If you have any questions regarding the above rules, please just ask the Pro Shop staff, they are happy to help.

This week’s competition for the men is Monthly Medal (Blue tees) and International Stableford for the women.

Pro Tip of the week – Craig Mitchell

If you want to make golf easier read the following.

Recently I have convinced a lot of my regular lesson clients to have 2 hybrids in their bag to cover their 4 & 5 iron distances, with 6 being the first iron in the bag.

The results and feedback have been amazing and the confidence they now have is huge, because they really are like cheating because they just are so easy to hit.

Rule(s) of the week

The rule of the week is more about restating what the rules and local rules are at Harewood GC, especially for any competitions you may enter.

We have a local rule that if your ball is resting on or very close to stones, and you feel they may damage your equipment, you may take a drop to the closest available area free of them, not just where you might like to play from. If you are on or near a tree root, you may take a drop, but it will cost you one shot to your score, it is not a free drop for relief of roots, unless the root is on a closely mown area (e.g. fairway, tee block).

With the mounding and tree work underway on the course, you may take relief at no penalty away from areas that are obviously ground under repair (GUR). These may not always be marked. Normally for smaller areas there will be clear marking.

For Saturdays in particular, printed cards must be taken and filled in correctly, and signed by both the player and their marker. The scores must also be legible on your card. The area for “X’s” on the left had side of the card must match the player’s score.

The out of bounds (OB) rule at Harewood is that if you are unsure about your shot, play a provisional just in case. You may not place a replacement ball on the fairway if you have gone OB, you must play another ball from the original spot you hit OB from. This rule is an optional rule for clubs, and we have decided not to use it currently.

HGC Allprint Ladies Shootout 2023

Weather conditions were certainly better this year for the competitors and helpers in the HGC Allprint Ladies Shootout held on Sunday 29th October.

We witnessed some fabulous golf shots played today by our competitors.  One highlight was Lorraine Bamford sinking a huge tricky putt from the side, back of the green in a shootout with Fiona Nicholls and Marie Bell on Hole no.11.

After a troublesome first hole, Helen McKay stayed remarkably calm and played through to a shootout on the 18th hole with Carey Fletcher.  The look on their faces when they had to chip from the back dip behind the green, to the semi downhill flag was priceless.  However they both had great chips and Helen took out the win.  Congratulations to the winner Helen McKay and runner up Carey Fletcher.

Thank you to all the competitors and helpers for a fun day.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the sponsors of this event - Ray and Annette Tansey (Allprint) for their amazing first prize of:

Two nights accommodation at Tekapo Luxury Apartments Two vouchers for McKenzie Golf Club Two vouchers for night sky viewing with Silver River Stargazing Plus a meal voucher for the award winning Kohan Japanese Restaurant A big thank you to Allprint and Annette also helped on the day.

So put your name down ladies next year to enter this competition.
