Member News – 4 February 2022

Note from GM

Members are advised that I am on a course in AKL from Wednesday next week, back in the office on Monday so there won’t be a Woodlands Word next Friday but will be sent on Monday 14th. Martin is also on leave Thursday & Friday so the office will be closed on Feb 10th and 11th.

Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow

A windy day didn’t make too much difference to the scores last Saturday. It was the first day of the Allprint Shotgun of 2022 for both men and women. If you haven’t previously had a go at this, I encourage you to enter for the year. It’s based on the best 6 stableford scores you record over the year when the match of the day is appropriate. The top 19 play-off over 18 holes late in the year and there are great prizes both through sponsorship and entries to play for.

An important note if you missed last week’s note that the opening day shotgun is now a best 3 of 4 teams event so that we can spread the field over time more than what two shotgun starts will do, so please book through DotGolf or contact the Pro Shop if you haven’t already secured a tee slot.

For those who haven’t been following Matt McLean’s venture into a pro golf career, he has had payouts early on with the latest being a shared win with 2 others at the Spark Business Martinborough Pro-am. Congratulations Matt, and it was a strong field with some of New Zealand’s best pro’s further down the leader board at the event.

Tree roots update

The Match committee was tasked with addressing a letter of concern from the mid-week men’s group regarding tree roots on our course with respect to the Health and Safety aspects. After quite some discussion with robust ideas and suggestions from both sides of the argument of introducing a revised local rule, it was a unanimous decision to retain the status quo. While there is a very clear and sympathetic understanding by the committee of the concerns raised, there was agreement that the rules of golf as they are, cater for the issue raised and must stand.

If a player who is addressing a ball off the mown fairway, anywhere on the course, has any reservations that they may be endangering themselves by hitting that ball on or near an exposed root, they are to take relief within the R & A rules regarding an unplayable lie with the appropriate penalty and continue.

While this may appear harsh to some, it is currently the nature of our course and so is just another factor we must play to. There is a medium to longer-term plan by the grounds staff to mound-over the more severe root exposures we have but as you can appreciate given the number of trees we have, this will take some time.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell

It’s a new year, but it’s the same old story if you want to score well. You must chip and one putt. Most people think their chipping is OK and are worried about their long shots. But my thoughts are: learn to chip properly around the green from different lies and lengths and don’t be surprised if your scorecard is four or five shots lower :)

Rule of the week (Rule 18.3 c)

When you are a bit unsure about whether a ball is in play, but lost, or maybe is out of bounds, you should always hit a provisional ball after telling your playing partners. The question is; when do you stop playing the provisional ball?

Its pretty simple. As long as the provisional ball is no closer to the hole than it is estimated the original ball may have rested, then you can continue to play it. So as soon as you are getting close to where you believe the original ball rests, go and look for it before heading back to either play or pick up your provisional ball. If you play the provisional ball when it is clearly closer to the pin than the estimated original ball resting place, it becomes in-play with the stroke and distance penalty applied. The original ball whether found or not, is now out of play.

Armstrong Motor Group Twilight 2022 – Series 1

Night 2 of 6 in the 2022 Twilight saw 53 players take on the back 9 in pleasant conditions. In the Ladies’ comp Diane Deuart compiled a very nice 21 19 points from no less than 4 others on 20, with Anne Ott pipping Amelia Ching on countback for 2nd place. Making it a great night for her, NTP on #15 also went to Diane. The Men was a little more clear-cut with Derek Watson continuing his good form with 22 points from Nigel Paterson on countback from Aaron Columbus, both on 21. NTP on #13 went to Tony Thorpe. I am away this coming Tuesday so Andrew will do the honours for prize-giving and Tony & Steve are looking after the scoring on the night – thanks fellas. A reminder to book well-ahead and the start time each week has moved ahead slightly to 5:45pm each week.

Covid Rules Reminder – Mask Wearing

As previously advised, the Government announced new rules in relation to mask wearing under RED. The new rules came into force on Thursday February 3rd and will apply in the Clubhouse. So, in effect all members and visitors will need to wear a face-mask when in the Clubhouse unless seated for eating and drinking. The rules are:

  • Mask wearing is now mandatory for customers at hospitality venues (the exception when the customer is eating or drinking still applies).
  • The customer’s face-covering must be a mask, not a scarf, bandana or other clothing.

Thursday 3 Feb - Matt Ryder Bayley’s Tournament (Yellow Tees) Stableford.

68 enjoyed what turned out to be a perfect day as the weather ‘gods’ did their bit in support of this tournament.  A shotgun start had us back in the club house around 1:00 pm and it felt more like a Sat. event with so many enjoying offerings from G&T’s and the Bar.

Thank you, Matt, for putting on this tournament and great to see it so well supported.  Thanks also to the MWM’s committee for the work that went into the organising and work that goes into events like this.
