Weekly Update – from Vice Club Captain Doug Claridge

The Harewood 4BBB competition is underway. It was a busy Saturday last week; the course was busy and consequently flowed slowly. Please remember to keep up with the group Infront of you and play ready golf!

The men’s leaders are the pair of Scott Manyweathers and Peter Coleman on at net 56. Scott was through the turn in 28, a front 9 that included 5 birdies, one eagle and came home square with the card on the back for a gross of 64. His partner Pete also had a good round of nett 65 to cement the low round of the day. The men have a second round of qualifying this weekend. The 32nd (last place) qualified at present are the “Easy Beats” pair of Les Keys and Allan Double on 71. There is still plenty of room to qualify with a good round this weekend. The ladies have had one round to qualify with 14 pairs making the second round.

Second rounds of the Harewood 4BBB the 12th of March for Men and 19th March.

This weekend it is the first round of FMS stableford for the ladies, and for those men not in the 4BBB qualifying a Stableford round.

The course is in great condition at present please remember to replace your divot if you take one and fill it with sand from you bucket. As for the greens, keep repairing your pitch marks to keep them slick and true.

Midweek Men Results – from Peter Larkin

Monday 21 Feb - Stableford

30 players for a stableford round played in a very determined North-Easterly wind which required a three-club adjustment when playing into it. We seem to have more of these ‘breezes’ than usual this summer- It would be nice to have a few Nor-Westers for a change.

Armstrong Motor Group Twilight 2022 – Series 1

The penultimate night in the first Series of 2022 Twilight saw 50 players on the front 9 on a very warm summers evening. Winner on the night for the Ladies was Joy Lord with 20 points from Sophie Gillespie on 19 who took 2nd place over Hyeza Kim on countback. NTP was jackpotted from last week and Anne Ott hit one close on #6 to take home $50! Amelia Ching has a 7 point lead at the top so looks unassailable but the minor placings are close with 6 players within 3 points of each other. On the men’s side it was great to see Steve Thomas make his debut on the twilight podium with a solid 21 points from four players all on 20 points. Nathan Harrison took 2nd on countback from Scott Double with Jason Straker winning NTP on #3. The men’s race looks like it’s out of the top 3 with Taylor Killick on 81, Derek Watson on 80 and Jason Blair on 77 points. Should be an exciting finish to a great series.

New Staff Member

A big welcome to Rod Davies who joined the greenkeeping team this week. Rod has recent experience in the landscaping industry and we are supporting him in completing his Level 4 Sports Turf apprenticeship over the next 2 years. All we have to do now is teach him how to play the game!

Bar Pricing Increase

I’m sure you are all very familiar with price increases of late and unfortunately the Club isn’t immune from having to pass these on. When we moved away from DB to Asahi in October 2019, comparable prices were held at levels from 2017 so the Club has absorbed numerous increases over this substantial period of time. Whilst we still enjoy the benefit of “club prices” rather than full retail, the margins still need to be maintained to keep pace with price rises across the board.

I acknowledge that some of the increases are significant and in future prices will be reviewed annually with minor adjustments made where required. Please be aware that we also have an obligation to our contracted caterers to have pricing relative to our market as their bar staff are paid on a percentage of takings basis. This is particularly relevant given the huge impact that lockdowns and restrictions have had on their business over these past 2 years or so.

We have also reviewed the range of products sold based on past sales and demand, so you may see one or two changes there also. The price change will take effect from Tuesday March 1st.

If you wish to discuss any aspect of these changes, please contact me directly.

Thanks – Neville
