Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow
With a few of our usual suspects down at the Fairlie 500, the field was a bit reduced on club day, though that didn’t stop some good rounds considering the breezy nor-easter being around. The greens were in great condition after what looked like a verti-cut treatment and a roll. Having good speed and running pretty true meant if you could read a putt, you were in with a chance.
The men’s AllPrint Shootout entries will close off this Saturday of March, so if you want to be in for a chance at the biggest prize pool we have in our golfing calendar, get in now!
Last Saturday’s results were:
Div 1 men (par)
- Justin Cotter (+2)
- Phil Barlow (+1)
- Peter Moore (+1)
Div 2 men (par)
- Jason Straker (+6)
- Simon Toulson (+4)
- Julian Newman (+3)
Ladies (par)
- Tracey Campen (+3)
- Marguerite Leitch
- Jo McNicholl
Congratulations to you all, and congratulations to all through to the next round of 4BBB.
Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
Today’s tip is something I have struggled with my whole golfing life.
If you miss a short putt or hit a bad shot, it must be filed and forgotten before the next shot. If you don’t, and it is in your mind when playing the next shot, it really is a form of self-sabotage.
So, like me, work on the above and together we can all improve.
Hint of the week
This week rather than a rule, I have replaced it with a grooming hint. Playing after work occasionally, it distresses me with how badly players leave bunkers. A small hint to help leave a bunker in better condition than you found it – after putting the rake in the sand and pulling the rake in towards you, then put it in the sand and push the mounds of sand away from you, filling in the holes you may have dug putting the rake into the sand initially. Also rake your footprints. Challenge yourself to leave the bunker pristine.
Upcoming Saturday golf (for full details refer to the 2022 programme).

Grass Area of Driving Range Closed for Major Renovation
As we can all see the grass teeing area of the range is widely used these days and is in dire need of rest and repair. From this Monday 28th the greenkeepers will be undertaking a major reno and all grass areas will be closed for up to 4 weeks so the new grass can take hold. So, until further notice all practice must be off the mats in the driving range building. We appreciate your patience whilst this necessary work is undertaken.
HGC Vaccination Policy
The announcement this week by the PM that vaccine mandates will no longer be mandatory from midnight April 4th obviously causes us to review our current policy of vaccination passports being required to be on site at Harewood. The Board will monitor the situation in the coming week and communicate any changes in due course. Until such time the current policy stands. A reminder that we are still in the red setting so mask wearing in the pro shop and clubhouse is still a requirement.
New “Blow-Down” Area
You may be aware that there have been plans to move the cart/shoe blow down area away from outside the pro shop to a new area created as you walk off the 18th hole. The current location isn’t ideal with the mess created, especially in Winter and the plan is for that area to have the air guns removed and convert into a bench seat. We have been lucky enough to have Bruce Maetzig agree to project manage the new area and work will commence on this very shortly, and hopefully completed in time for Winter! Attached are the original concept plans for your perusal – there have been some changes but overall the area will look very similar to this. We have already received some very generous offers of support for the project so if any individuals wish to make a donation/contribution then please contact Neville in the office.
Food in the Pro Shop
The caterers will be supplying freshly wrapped sandwiches and muffins to the pro shop from tomorrow, Saturday 26th. These will be available from the drinks fridge and paid for at the pro shop counter. Initially there will be sandwiches (large $5 and small club $3) and muffins ($4). Your support for G&T Catering is much appreciated as it has been a difficult time for them since they came on board last October. Any feedback and suggestions welcome.
