Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow

A beautiful sunny and windless day greeted all on club day last Saturday. We were missing a few of the usual suspects falling victim to Covid, however many of the men’s 4BBB matches still took place. The women had an FMS stableford round.

An important note that this Sunday morning is the end of daylight savings, so the bookings for next week will move to 2 tee bookings. Please take note of which tee you select in readiness on the day.

Masters Monday: Please see the attached flyer for the opportunity to have breakfast at the club while watching the last round of the Masters on Monday 11 April. There will be a full breakfast provided by G & T Catering for $20 and the opportunity to enter a sweepstake for $10. Please email Neville with your interest at neville@harewoodgolf.co.nz. Non-members are also welcome. For those who wish to stay on, the option to play golf from 1:30pm onwards is available.

Last Saturday’s results were:

Div 1 men (stableford)

  1. Peter Chadwick (38 pts)
  2. Bruce Maetzig (38 pts)
  3. Kerry Lake (37 pts)

Div 2 men (stableford)

  1. Wayne Coleman (39 pts)
  2. George Grieve (38 pts)
  3. Iain Findlater (36 pts)

Ladies (stableford)

  1. Deborah Wekking (41 pts)
  2. Jung Hee Kim (38 pts)
  3. Victoria Webb-Smart (37 pts)

Congratulations to you all, and congratulations to all through to the next round of 4BBB.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell

The late great Seve Ballesteros had the best short game the world of professional golf had ever seen. (He was my idol growing up).

He was asked on many occasions the reasons why he was head and shoulders above the rest and here is one of his answers.

“Think of the eight (words) to be great.”

Stare at the target glance at the ball!

(Most club golfers do the opposite - they stare at the ball and glance at the target)

Enjoy your golf!

Rule of the week (Course played as it is found – 8.1a)

Q: Can I repair a pitch mark that is in my line of play on the fringe of the green?

A: No. You can only repair pitch marks on the green. You may not improve your line to the pin if the area of concern is off the green. In the case of having “lift, clean, and place” in play, of course you may mark, then place your ball so it is not hampered by the pitch mark. After you have played your shot, you may of course fix the damaged area.

For those who wish to have a rule book at hand, these are available from the Pro Shop or the office during workday hours.

Upcoming Saturday golf (for full details refer to the 2022 programme).

2 Apr – Men: Monthly medal (blue tees). Women: LGU Rnd 3, Putting, Harewood Cup Rnd 1.

9 Apr – Men: 3rd Rnd 4BBB, others Stableford. Women: 2nd Rnd 4BBB, others multiple stableford.

16 Apr – Easter missed shotgun tournament –start at 11:30am – see separate article re a shotgun breakfast.

23 Apr – Men: Stableford (blue tees). Women: Nancy McCormick 4somes 18 holes Rnd 2, others combined stableford.

As always, please remember to fix your pitch marks and divots, and rake the bunkers so they are how you would like to have played them.

Practicing on Course

A reminder to those who think “practicing” on course with up to 10 balls is acceptable. There have been a number of instances lately where greenkeeping staff have witnessed players hitting multiple balls off tees and into greens. Our rules are 2 balls maximum, and I have instructed staff to identify offenders and provide me with their details. A decision will then be made as to whether to temporarily suspend serial offenders. Please don’t be the one to put any of us in that position! Thanks - Neville

HGC Vaccination Policy

Please find attached a member communique regarding our Vaccination Policy. A reminder that we are still in the red setting so mask wearing in the pro shop and clubhouse is still a requirement.

Easter Shotgun Breakfast – Saturday April 16th

With an 11:30am shotgun start there’s plenty of time to enjoy a beautiful, cooked breakfast and coffee/tea in the clubhouse whilst watching the golf prior to tee off. The breakfast will be available from 9:00am. Please contact the caterers to pre-book so they can prepare accordingly – 03 359 8843 opt 2 or harewoodgolf@gtcatering.co.nz or at the counter.

New “Blow-Down” Area

You may be aware that there have been plans to move the cart/shoe blow down area away from outside the pro shop to a new area created as you walk off the 18th hole. The current location isn’t ideal with the mess created, especially in Winter and the plan is for that area to have the air guns removed and convert into a bench seat. We have been lucky enough to have Bruce Maetzig agree to project manage the new area and work will commence on this very shortly, and hopefully completed in time for Winter! Attached are the original concept plans for your perusal – there have been some changes but overall the area will look very similar to this. We have already received some very generous offers of support for the project so if any individuals wish to make a donation/contribution then please contact Neville in the office.

Food in the Pro Shop

A reminder that the caterers are supplying freshly wrapped sandwiches and muffins to the pro shop on the weekends. These will be available from the drinks fridge and paid for at the pro shop counter. Initially there will be sandwiches (large $5 and small club $3) and muffins ($4). Your support for G&T Catering is much appreciated as it has been a difficult time for them since they came on board last October.

Volunteer Working Bee

The next one is Wednesday 6th of April from 9.30am.

See you there. Thanks.

Women’s Interclub Update – from Lesley hedges

Harewood has five teams playing interclub this year, three mid-week and two on the weekend.

Our mid-week 18 Hole Silver team, who were last year's winners, are currently sitting fourth by a very narrow margin, with one more match of the round robin to play, before the semis. Their last match, this coming Monday, is against Clearwater, the current leaders, at Clearwater.

In the mid-week 18 Hole 4s, Harewood 1 are co-leaders of the competition with Bottle Lake.  Harewood 2 are currently in 9th position. This competition is not quite halfway through their draw, with four more matches before the semis. They are playing this Monday at Weedons.

In the weekend competition, Harewood 2, who were also winners last year, are leading their zone (there are three zones) and Harewood 1 are in 6th place. They both have one more match, this Sunday, at Avondale, before a bye.

Congratulations on all successes to date and also for your participation. Good luck to you all with your upcoming matches. Just do your best and enjoy the experience.
