GM Farewell
Sadly, this will be the last WW that I write as I leave my role next Wednesday June 1st. Martin will take over compiling the weekly communique until my replacement commences. It has been a pleasure working with a very passionate and professional team over nearly 6 ½ years, and I am extremely proud of what has been achieved in that time. Many friendships have been formed with staff, members, volunteers and the Board, and I’m sure these will be maintained as I continue as a “normal” Harewood member. There have been too many highlights to mention them all (and a few lowlights if I’m being honest), but the greatest satisfaction comes from seeing the Club in a positive financial situation and being able to invest in our facilities for the benefit of members and guests alike. If I don’t get the chance to chat before I leave next week then I will be playing on Saturday June 11th and hopefully fairly regularly from then on.
My sincere thanks for all the support and my best wishes to everyone involved in this great Club.
Neville
A note from the Board re GM replacement
We have been actively recruiting to replace Neville and are doing interviews this coming week. We had in excess of 35 applications, and it has taken some time to assess suitable applicants and liaise with Des Topp from Golf Managers Assn NZ who had been engaged to manage the overall process. We hope to be able to confirm a new GM in the next week to 10 days.

Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow
The finalists off the Harewood 4BBB along with the rest of us were greeted with a cool starting day last Saturday. Snow on the mountains for the first time this year signaled winter coming, along with the heavier ground conditions. That being said, the greens were hard and fast so the skills of the 4BBB finalists would be tested.
A reminder to be vigilant with cancelling your booking if you can’t make it on a Saturday in particular. Once we get to the winter 2 tee starts, we will be pressed with tee slots so please be considerate of other members wanting to play if you cannot after making a booking.
Congratulations to Jacky Zhang for his hole in one on the 6th last weekend. That’s 2 in the last couple of weeks.
This week’s competition for the men is yellow tees – either all irons Stableford or Bisque par. For the women it is FMS Stableford Rnd 4.
This Sunday is the annual grudge match between Metro A and Metro B men’s interclub teams. Good luck and try not to be too hard on each other.
And don’t forget to book with the pro shop so you are guaranteed a spot in the Queen’s Birthday Shotgun next Saturday at 11:30am.
Results for last Saturday
As mentioned above, the finals for both women and men were played last weekend, and results were:
- Women: Di Shearer & Helen McKay winning over Julie Jones & Ranee Morgan on the 18th hole.
- Men: Michel Cupido & Terry Smith winning over Scott Manyweathers & Pete Coleman on the 20th hole.
Congratulations to the winners of one of our flagship competitions for the year.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
Today’s tip is when you’re all rugged up for a cold day (thermal, shirt, jersey and a jacket feeling like the Michelin man or women).
Don’t rush your swing, especially from the top of your backswing to the ball. Take plenty of club and swing smooth.
Rule of the week (When your ball is in Penalty area Rule 17.1a)
When your ball is in Penalty Area
While we don’t have penalty areas at Harewood GC, many of you play either casually or interclub competition at many courses where they do exist, so this rule is to help you all.
Your ball is in a penalty area when any part of it lies on or touches the ground or anything else inside the edge of the penalty area or is above the edge or any other part of the penalty area.
Refer to the website for more complete information on this rule.

Saturday Women Update – from Lesley Hedges
Played in almost perfect conditions, Saturday saw the final of the Harewood 4BBB, with Julie Jones and Ranee Morgan playing Helen McKay and Di Shearer. In a hard fought match, and having been 4 down at the turn, Helen and Di ended up winning on the 18th. A great match, played in true golfing spirit. Well done to you all.

Midweek Mens Results (prior week) – from Peter Larkin
Monday 16 May - Stableford Yellow Ball.
Sadly, cancelled due to weather.
Thursday 19 May - Bisque Par
Today’s forecast looked good so ‘game on’. Unfortunately, crossing the Waimak the heavens opened up! Arriving at the course the rain wasn’t so bad and little after 9:30 28 ‘golfers’ headed out. Strong winds and rain aren’t a great mixture, however conditions improved, and it turned out to be quite pleasant. The Par scores were mostly quite good, however those in the Top Ten Stableford comp. were less than average!
Results:
White Tees
Division 1 Chris Straker +4
Peter Larkin +2 CB
Dong Cho +2
Division 2 John Gilmore +6
Darryl Dowthwaite +4
Cyril White +2
Yellow Tees
Brian Blazey +5
