Memorial

Janice Gunn and Mary Robertson

It is with great sadness that we report the passing this week of two former members, Janice Gunn and Mary Robertson.

Janice passed away last Thursday, aged 87. Friendly, positive and always up for a laugh, as was said in her funeral notice, “she found good in everything and the best in everyone”.  She was great company and a delightful friend.

Mary is recorded on the honours board, both for her golf and her contribution to the club as an office bearer. She was Bronze B champion in 2000 and 2013, Women’s Club Captain in 2000 and 2001 and Women’s President in 2013 and 2014. She was also involved with Canterbury Women’s Golf at the time when the men’s and women’s sections were amalgamating and in 2012 received a Distinguished Service Award for her contributions. For many years, Mary and her husband, Bruce, also ran twilight golf at Harewood. Besides her keen intellect and the organizational and people skills which enabled her to be so effective in these roles, Mary was warm, positive, enthusiastic and with a keen interest in people and the world at large. We are all the richer for her friendship and all she has done for Harewood.

Our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of these two very special women.

Weekly Update – By Doug Claridge

It was a day of two halves last weekend for the men’s Monthly Medal and Ladies LGU. Persistent heavy showers for those playing early and improving conditions to warm and sunny in the afternoon. The course was in great condition, however with the fairways getting damper, it was noticeable the number of divots and especially unfilled divots out on the course. Please take a sand bucket, repair, and fill your divots, and for those who are too lazy to fix their own.

With Phil away, I was faced with several questions when I arrived at the Pro Shop to play, which in consideration would have led to players being disqualified.
Firstly the use of carts in Match Play. Carts are allowed for club competitions, if you have a valid medical certificate. Using a cart in club competition events can be considered as giving you an unfair advantage against your opposition and also to all others playing in the competition. With the club champs, and BCHP competitions still to be played please be aware you can be disqualified for using a cart without a valid medical certificate.
Secondly the rules of the Saturday competition are governed by rules laid down in the programme handbook. It clearly states that play for the competition is from the first tee, outside the winter tee times (when we tee off 1 & 10). There was a group of players who decided to tee off hole 10, and joint the field on tee no 1. This also leads the players to be disqualified from the competition. Please tee off from first unless otherwise directed by the Pro Shop.

I jumped the gun last week with when we have 2 tee starts, this will not take place until 10 June, so ignore last week’s note for now, I will remind you all again a bit later.

A reminder for those through to the next round of 4BBB matches. Check the results sheet to see who you are playing in the next round, and if you can’t make the Saturday allocated, please contact the Pro Shop to help arrange an alternate day/time. Note that Saturday 15 April is round 3 for the men’s 4BBB, as this was omitted from the programme. Make a note of the date if you were a round 2 winner.

This week, Easter Saturday is a Shotgun start, only 1 competition and teeing off at 11:30am. The entry fee is $20 which include 2s, nett eagles and closest to the pin . The weather looks good and fine for a good day of golf.

Pro Tip of the week - Craig Mitchell

This week’s Pro Tip is about the power of the mind.

Next time you play, try to be in the PRESENT when you play the shot. It’s easy to be thinking about what happened on previous holes or what you might do on the holes to come.

If you can get into this mode, it really will help you with your game.

Rule of the week – (Rule 13.1d) Accidental moving of ball marker on the green

Q: As a player is about to replace their ball on the green, they accidentally drop the ball on their ball marker which causes the marker to move. What is the ruling?

A: There is no penalty if the player, opponent, or another player in stroke play accidentally moves the player’s ball or ball-marker on the putting green. The ball or ball-marker must be replaced and there is no penalty to anyone.
