Weekly Update - By Club Captain Phil Barlow

A great golfing day with a quiet field was the order for last Saturday. There was some fantastic scoring all around, especially as the rough is starting to have an impact to all that end up in it. The qualifying for the men’s Allprint Shootout has now closed and those that have qualified will have been contacted.

Centenary Xmas Shotgun Closing Day Stableford

Due to a high demand of members wanting this day to be our Hamper Day only. The match committee have decided to revert to the original day as planned in the programme. Thank you to those who contacted the Pro shop and indicated if they can play on the day. The centenary event will be reprogrammed and included in the 2024 programme of events.

Interclub report

The semi-finals didn’t treat the Woodward or Blank teams well, and unfortunately both went down. Blank to the eventual winners Russley and Woodward to Christchurch who also went on to win their final. For more information about the day, read the article here on the Canterbury website. It was a very hot day but not too breezy which is a fairly rare thing at Pegasus, and the matches were a lot closer than the numbers suggest. A big thanks to the players and managers for having a good go at it, and as the saying goes, “there is always next year”.

Metro A and B teams have had another round, and both were played at Harewood while the Woodward and Blank teams were battling it out at Pegasus. The Metro A team came home with a win 4 ½ to 3 ½ win over Templeton, with a couple of spots being backfilled. They are placed 5th currently with a game in hand. Metro B had a great 5-3 win over Bottle Lake and are placed 2nd equal on games after 3 rounds. Well done guys!

This weekend, the men have Blind Pairs 4BBB stroke and the women have Yellow/White tee option, Stroke.

Pro Tip of the week – Craig Mitchell

Bunker Play

Next time you have a green side bunker shot and the sand is wet and firm – Square the club face so the leading edge of your sand iron can now dig into the sand but do everything else the same. The softer the sand the more you open the face so you can use the bounce of the club.

Rule(s) of the week (Rule 8.1a)

Playing the course as it is found

Except in the limited ways allowed in Rules 8.1b, c and d, a player must not take any of these actions if they improve the conditions affecting the stroke:

(1) Move, bend or break any:

•    Growing or attached natural object,

•    Immovable obstruction, integral object or boundary object, or

•    Tee-marker for the teeing area when playing a ball from that teeing area.

(2) Move a loose impediment or movable obstruction into position (such as to build a stance or to improve the line of play).

(3) Alter the surface of the ground, including by:

•    Replacing divots in a divot hole,

•    Removing or pressing down divots that have already been replaced or other cut turf that is already in place, or

•    Creating or eliminating holes, indentations or uneven surfaces.

(4) Remove or press down sand or loose soil.

(5) Remove dew, frost or water.

Harewood Women Successful at Champion of Champions / Rosebowl Day – By Lesley Hedges

Last Sunday the prestigious Champion of Champions / Rosebowl Day was held at Christchurch GC. For this tournament the club champions of each section, plus the runner up from Bronze A, compete in a field of other club champions, playing the somewhat daunting format of gross stableford. This year twenty one teams took part. Harewood’s team, comprising Lynn Brand, Diane Chaney and Janet O’Brien (standing in for Diane Deuart who was unavailable) were runners up to Rangiora in the Rosebowl and in the 9 hole section Erika O’Donnell was also runner up and won the longest drive. Diane and Janet were runners up by one shot for the Pat Rennell Salver, awarded to the Bronze pair with the highest aggregate gross stablefords and Lynn Brand was third in the 36 hole nett Hagley Trophy.

Well done to you all and thank you for representing Harewood so creditably.
