Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow

A beautiful cloud free, still day greeted all for a multi-tee start across the course last Saturday. Those who booked in and came a bit earlier started the day with a great breakfast by G & T catering, so they were ready to hit the course. After a tough week weather-wise, the course held up pretty well with the greens still being some of the best in Canterbury as many have told me. It was also great to see so many in the clubhouse afterwards enjoying themselves and congratulating the winners for the day, and for that I thanks you all.

The women played a Stableford round, and it was Bells Mugs for the men with multiple Stableford pairs.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell

Over the years I have been very lucky to play over a dozen rounds with Sir Bob Charles, mainly at Clearwater. After I got to know him, any questions I had, he was happy to answer. So while having a drink in the club house after golf one day, I asked him how he won the 1963 British Open. He answered Putting Craig!

Cameron Smith put on a final nine hole putting clinic under enormous pressure to win at the home of golf this week, which will be talked about for years to come. So, I guess at all levels if you can find a way to putt your best you will see your scores come tumbling down.

Rule of the week (When Ball or Ball-Marker Moves on Putting Green: Rule 13.1 d)

There are two specific Rules for a ball or ball-marker that moves on the putting green.

(1) No Penalty for Accidentally Causing Ball to Move. There is no penalty if the player, opponent, or another player in stroke play accidentally moves the player’s ball or ball-marker on the putting green.

The player must:

  • Replace the ball on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated) (see Rule 14.2), or
  • Place a ball-marker to mark that original spot.

Exception – Ball Must Be Played as It Lies When Ball Begins to Move During Backswing or Stroke and Stroke Is Made (see Rule 9.1b).

If the player or opponent deliberately lifts the player’s ball or ball-marker on the putting green, see Rule 9.4 or Rule 9.5 to find out if there is a penalty.

(2) When to Replace Ball Moved by Natural Forces. If natural forces cause a player’s ball on the putting green to move, where the player must play from next depends on whether the ball had already been lifted and replaced on its original spot:

  • Ball Already Lifted and Replaced. The ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated) (see Rule 14.2), even though it was moved by natural forces and not by the player, the opponent, or an outside influence (see Rule 9.3, Exception).
  • Ball Not Already Lifted and Replaced. The ball must be played from its new spot (see Rule 9.3).

Midweek Mens Results – from Peter Larkin

Monday 18 Jul -  Stroke

A change in the weather with blustery Nor’ West winds forecast at up to 120kph in exposed places!  28 hopefuls headed out in reasonable conditions with a ‘breeze’ that required a 2-club adjustment- Not too bad.  Conditions improved as we continued, however it didn’t last.  The wind strengthening with a few holes remaining and howling by the end making shot play difficult.  We had 2 gentlemen blown off their feet and 5 eventually withdrawing before finishing!

Results:

                             Division 1            Ramiro Guerrero               72

                                                           John Yates                          75 CB

                                                           Peter Larkin                       75

                            Division 2             Bill Turner                           77

                                                           Simon Hubble                    78

                                                           David Bell                           80
