Club Captain Update – from Doug Claridge

The Harewood Men’s presidents’ team have continued the successful season by Harewood in the Canterbury Presidents interclub grade. The final round was held last weekend, and with a win 6/ 2 against Hagley at Avondale, the president’s team finished in second place. They finished strongly over the last two games having wins but were pipped at the post by Templeton by one point. The Presidents grade MVP for the whole competition went to Harewood’s Allan Ewington, who with 10 wins from 11 games through the season. Well done to manager Mike Stanley and to all the players who have contributed to the team’s successful season. Mike Stanley (Dad) is aiming for the top spot next year.

A big thank you must be given to Bruce Maetzig, who within a short period of time organised a very successful fundraising tournament for Matt McLean. At last count The Peninsular Beachfront Resort Golf Tournament had raised in excess of $26K. to go towards funding Matt’s travel and golfing expenses for the next 12 months. It was great to see the club house full of people all pulling together for this good cause. The weather turned it on, and for those who have played the course, thank Matt McLean for the pin placements. A big thank you to all those that competed, donated, helped organise and volunteered in helping Bruce produce an outstanding day, and a day to remember for the club.

I have been notified by Canterbury Golf of the Men’s Champion of Champions event to be played on the 16th June at Waitikiri golf course. Entry is restricted to the current club champs in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior grades. If you were the winner your grade of the club champs, please let me know as the entries close on Friday 7 June.

In other events, Julie Hamilton had a hole in one on the 3rd hole at Nelson Golf Club, whilst playing the TSB Nelson Festival of Golf. Well done Julie! The South Island John Deere team championship tournament was played this week at Weedons. The Harewood team comprising of Head Greenkeeper Colin Posa, Club Manager Neville Bamford and Club Captain, Doug Claridge, shot 9 under in a 3-ball elimination scramble event to win. The win qualifies Harewood to play in the Trans-Tasman final held in Melbourne later this year.

The next couple of weeks are busy around the club, there is a volunteer working bee Sunday 19th, the Harewood 4 Ball semi-finals for men and ladies will be completed on Saturday, with the final in both grades scheduled for the Saturday 18th. There is a planned shotgun Mixed Multi-tee start on the 1st of June, before the beginning of two tee starts into June.

Matt McLean Fundraising Tournament
from Bruce Maetzig

The Peninsular Beachfront Resort Golf Tournament, supporting Matt McLean, held last Friday, was a roaring success. The weather gods favoured us with a stunning Canterbury day, and with a capacity field playing on a Harewood course that was presented in showcase condition, there were plenty of smiles all round!

The golf started bang on time after the pregame BBQ, and with novelty holes scattered throughout the round, another BBQ on the 6th hole, the game progressed without a hitch, (although the drinks cart was in hot demand) and was then followed by the auction, prize giving and raffles, and dinner for 160 people. Needless to say, the last players left the clubhouse after 11pm!

Once the dust had settled, we added up all the fundraising, such as entry fees, donations, raffle and auction money, Dan Hillier’s gambling hole (6th) and Matt’s negotiated shot hole (13th) etc, and we are pleased to announced we raised a staggering $27,720.00! Matt can now focus solely on his golf in preparation for his trip to USA without having to work out how to pay the bills!

Matt and I would like to say thank you to all who supported this event, it exceeded all our expectations!

Bruce Maetzig
