Club Captain Update – from Doug Claridge

There was a large turnout at the memorial service for our club Patron Les Scott last Friday. For those who have been in the club rooms you may have noticed the large selection of golf scorecards hung up around the windows. These are a collection of Les’s cards from his overseas trips and show his great love for the game and the courses he had played and enjoyed with his wife Debbie and group of friends. It reflects Les’s great enjoyment of the game we enjoy and the experiences of travelling and experiencing other course around the world have had an influence of the course he called home.

The season is turning towards winter, and consequently the ground is softening. It has been noticeable in the last couple of weeks of an increase of divots and pitch marks on the fairways and the greens. Please be proactive in course care, carry a sand bucket and a pitch repair tool, and use them. Our course is in good condition and+ our greens staff work hard to achieve this, so please keep it this way by filling divots (not just your own) and repairing pitch marks. A reminder that now the greens have softened they can be scarred by players twisting on their feet and spikes digging in. A polite reminder to those heavy footed among us!

A big thank you for those members (14) volunteered for a couple of hours last Sunday to care for the course. There entrance and paths to the 10th tee looks great and the gardens weeded.

The Mens 4 ball best ball (Sponsors Cup) final was played last Saturday. A big congratulations to the winners Bruce Maetzig and Errol Hume who hung on to beat Chris Lippitt and Danny O’Neill 2/1 after being 5 up at one stage. The final was played in good spirit and well done to both finalists.

Queens Birthday is two weeks away, there is a Multi Tee Shotgun scheduled to start at 11.30am. Mixed multi tee starts are always a great way to get out and meet other golfers from the club who you don’t normally play with. From June 8th the Saturday competition moves to a two tee start from the 1st and 10th tees. This concentrates the playing field and brings along the issues of being aware of your own place play within the field. With the concentrated fields, it is important that if you are booked in on a tee time, and you can’t make it, please let the Proshop know to allow your slot to be filled. It is frustrating to Craig when he has calls from players wanting to play, and having no gaps, and then finding players not turning up who have booked.

Hole in One’s

I have been remiss in acknowledging Iain Findlater’s ace on hole 13 on April 22nd – congrats Iain.

Club Captain Doug Claridge aced the 15th on the 15th for his 2nd this year and 3rd in only 5 years of playing. Pretty impressive Doug and further proof that there is a large element of luck required ??
