Club Captain Update – from Doug Claridge

It’s a near full field for golf on Saturday. However, the showers forecast for the morning on Saturday are forecast to clear by the afternoon. It looks like winter golf conditions! With the two tee starts it is important that all players are on time for your tee time in order for play to flow smoothly. Last weekend there were a few issues with players changing groups out of their allocated tees and withdrawing from the field without advising Craig in the pro-shop. This left a couple of groups being joined together due to single players left on their own, and one group having to miss their tee time due to a player withdrawing without advising anyone and other members of their group looking for them. Please be reminded to stick to your allocated tee times and groups. This weekend is the first round of the BCHP, all players have an allocated tee time and the draw has been posted in the Pro shop and in last week’s Woodlands Word. The weather last weekend affected the number of players in the field, however with the BCHP first round being played there are minimal gaps in the field. If you are in the early tee-off groups please be aware to pace your play in your first 9 holes, otherwise a jam up will occur when reach the 1st or 10th tee where players will still be starting.

Last weekend’s cold weather, and fast greens didn’t create low scoring in the Men’s Monthly Medal or the Ladies FMS. The course is continuing to be in great condition; however, the number of divots being left unfilled on the fairways continues to be a grumble I hear from some members. Please make sure you and your playing partners carry and use a sand bucket.

Matt McLean is playing his second tournament in his US journey. He missed the cut in his first tournament and checking this morning he was place 41st at the Monroe International event in Pittsford New York. Interclub Competition 2019

The Pollock, Woodward, Blank and Simon Cup season is due to start a month later this year, with the first rounds being Sunday August 11th (Pollock Cup still TBC). We have gone close in recent years in some of these comps so we are very keen to secure at least one trophy in 2019.

Members keen on representing the Club are invited to register their interest with GM Neville for Woodward, Blank & Simon Cup squads, and for Pollock Cup please contact Julie Jones.

Julie – bj_jones@xtra.co.nz

Neville – neville@harewoodgolf.co.nz

You can also add your name to the list on display in the pro shop.

We will organise trial dates for those who register interest – probably a Sunday(s) late June/early July.

Matt McLean - USA Update

Hi everyone,

Time flies with my first week in the USA almost over and what a week it has been.

After a few days of adjusting to the 30+ degree weather, we started our first event, The Dogwood Invitational, played at Druid Hills in Atlanta Georgia. The course we played was quite short, hilly and tight but in excellent condition with greens running at around 12 to 13 on the stimpmeter, very fast!

In the first round I had 74, with four 3 putts putting an end stopping of any chance of a good round. The second and third rounds were played on the same day as storms were forecast in the area. In round two I shot 73, but missed the cut which was the top 40 players, and was set at -5

During round three there was history making round with a player shooting a -15 round of 57, which is just a crazy score, especially in a tournament, although he didn’t go on to win the tournament, the winning 4 round score being -21.

With the tournament being moved forward I have had a couple days spare in Atlanta where my billets who I'm staying with got me the opportunity to play East Lake Golf Club where the Tour Championship on the PGA tour is played every year, this was a such an amazing chance and the course lived up to all expectations.

I also was able to go the 71,000 seat Mercedes-Benz Stadium to see Mexico- Venezuela in soccer which was absolutely mental, this was a big change to watching the Crusaders in AMI stadium…

Overall my game is in a solid space heading up to New York next week for the Monroe Invitational. I just need to settle into my game earlier in the week and get the ball rolling on the greens more consistently to move my name up the leader board.

Thank you all for you continued support, feel free to like Matt McLean Golf on Facebook as well.
