Club Captain Update - from Doug Claridge

One of life’s pleasures is dry feet, there’s nothing worse than finishing a round of golf with soggy feet because your shoes are just not up to the conditions. The wet weather of late has created slippery and damp ground conditions on the tee block and on the course. For those who have finished a round with wet damp feet or have struggled with getting a stable platform when teeing off there is a solution. Comfort and stability can be improved with a correctly fitting shoe. As golfers we invest in our clubs, carts but do we look after our feet?

On Thursday 1st August from 9am -1pm Craig and Carl are hosting a Footjoy Shoe and Glove fitting event.  A Foot Joy Professional shoe fitter will be onsite to give you advice and get the right shoe for you. It is estimated that 70% of golfers wear the wrong shoes size, which can lead to comfort issues or poor stability when hitting the club. Having purchased a new pair of FootJoy’s through the Pro Shop recently, I can vouch that I have had dry feet and increased stability when playing the ball that has helped in the wet ground conditions over the last couple of weeks. The selection of new shoes that are on offer in the pro shop are well worth investing some time and coming down.

Last weekend’s damp conditions reduced the number of players for the Men’s Stableford competition off the Yellow tees and in the Ladies LGU. There has been a bit of movement in the Shootout competition table because of some players good scoring. With club champs starting in mid-August, there may be a limited number of rounds left for some players to post a good score to push for a spot in the final 19 for the Shootout on the 10th of November. Congratulations to John Keepa, who took home the Net eagle jackpot last weekend – it was a good weekend for John and Joy, with Joy cleaning up the ladies LGU, putting and the Top Cat Carpark.

Marie Shaw – Life Member – Obituary
It is with much sadness that we record the death of Marie on the 14th July 2019.

Marie joined the Harewood Golf Club in 1969, but ill health forced her to resign. Marie’s determination to play golf saw her re-join Harewood in 1975.

Marie became Ladies Secretary 1978 – 1982. At this time Harewood was the largest Ladies Golf Club in the South Island - with over 400 members. In those days it was part of the Secretary’s duties to keep full records of all lady members.

In 1981 The New Zealand Golf Union asked Harewood to host two New Zealand events. A Tournament Committee was formed and Marie became Tournament Secretary 1981- 1983.

In 1982 we hosted the New Zealand Veterans Foursomes – a 4 day event and in 1983 we hosted the New Zealand Amateur Championships. Foursomes, Stroke and Match Play were played over 7 days. There were 9 Australians and 1 player from Fiji and 1 from Canada in the field. These tournaments were huge events and run so successfully by the Harewood Ladies with help from husbands and Mid Week Men.

Marie became Ladies Captain in 1984-1985 and Ladies President in 1992 – 1993.

Marie served on the floral Committee for 11 years and made generous donations of both trees and money for the courses.

Marie was a very able golfer and has represented the Club in Pennant matches and Canterbury Championship events. Marie was Senior Champion in 1980, 1986, 1987 and 1994. She scored her first hole in one in July 2000.

Marie was nominated and granted Life Membership in 2000.

Neville Update

Neville’s surgery went well on Monday morning, staying at a key-hole level of entry. This will hopefully speed up his recovery time, he was even up out of bed on the first night. Neville is in the Southern Cross Hospital on Bealey but will hopefully be home to finish his recovery in the next day or so.
