Club Captain Update - from Doug Claridge

A new month, and winter arrives. A fresh blast of cold SW air is forecast to run through quickly and clear for Saturday’s golf, but remain windy and cold. This weekend the Men play for the Ashby Mugs, the format is combined Stableford. The ladies have two competitions this weekend both Stableford; a Grandmothers Stableford and for those who have no grandchildren Stableford.

August sees the start of club champs. Qualifying rounds are the 17th and 24th of August, with the first round scheduled the 14th of September. The change in timing for this year’s club champs is to play our club champs when the course is the best condition. Given the speed of the greens last weekend, it should be good golf competition if the course stays in the condition it is in. The grades will be set following the Monthly medal on the 10th of August. Ladies club champs start late September.

Pink is the order of the day next week. Please help support the awareness of Breast cancer by donating and by wearing something pink on the course next week. Help raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ; a great organisation providing pushing for new frontiers in early detection, treatment and support of breast cancer.

We have made great progress on this and I would expect to have this operational within the next couple of weeks. I will broadcast the “go live” date as soon as testing has finished.

Charles Tour Harewood Open

It’s official, we will not be hosting the Jennian Homes Charles Tour in October. New Zealand Golf have just sent through the announcement below:

Jennian Homes Charles Tour on the move in Christchurch

The Jennian Homes Charles Tour has found a new home in Christchurch with the DVS Pegasus Open to take place on October 3 – 6, at the Pegasus Golf Club.

While some members will not mind this news, I think it is a sad day for the club and Neville, who has put a huge amount of work in to keeping this tournament here and raising Harewood’s profile as a consequence.

29 Days to Spring

Hard to believe with the weather this week that daffodils are starting to pop out around the course. It’s a great time of year as we head towards Spring with warmer weather and longer days for golf to come.
