Member Update – from Club Captain Doug Claridge

The weather this weekend looks perfect for those looking for one more round for shootout or to push themselves up the pecking order in club champs. A reminder in terms of club champs; matches need to be played on or before the scheduled date in the programme, there is a 2 week gap between the rounds so please respect the draw. If the weather gods behave, then the semis and finals will be played on 12th and 19 of October. With the loss of the Charles Tour on the first weekend of October there will be an addition to the programme, and shootout round added.

Congratulations to Keith Mabin who scored a hole in one on the 6th hole last Saturday. The Woodward cup team had another win, on greens at Coringa described by Matt McLean as the best in Canterbury. The Blank team had their first win against Templeton at Pegasus.

Both Fiona and Hyeza were also awarded the Pumphrey Cup ie: the pair with the highest number of stableford points.

It was 1993 when Harewood last won the Cowlishaw Cup - so we salute these 4 golfers.

Fed Shaw – Life Member - Obituary

It is with sadness that Harewood golf club commemorates a loss of another significant contributor to the club in our earlier years, when golf membership was large and two courses existed. Harewood Golf Club moves in new directions with the loss of the years of experience that has occurred this year.

Fred Shaw died in his 93rd year on August 18, 2019, peacefully after a short illness. He follows his wife after his death notice records 'A Great Innings'. Fred was a contributor to clubs and committees in Canterbury. Fred was a volunteer that all clubs need to be successful. Fred’s service to Harewood Golf Club and in his later years to the Arthurs Pass Association where in his role on committees, serving as accountant and later auditor needs to be recognised. He was a keen boatie as well as golfer, he spent 60 summer years camping at Totaranui, and enjoying his time in the mountains at the top of the spur, before lonely planet discovered it. His wife Maire passed 6 weeks ago and was recognised for her significant contribution to Harewood Golf Club on the 27/08/2019. Fred was active well into his 80’s and still attended AGM’s until recently.

Pollock Cup – from Julie Jones team manager

25th August At Weedons Vs Pegasus 4/2 Loss

A great start to the day. The Sun was out!

The course was very dewy and heavy. Some of the team took a few holes to warm up, and the opposition was playing some consistent golf.

Anne Dick @2, hit the front early, playing some nice golf and holding her own to the 17th for a 2/1 Win over Karen De Latour. Lynn Brand @6 was 3 down after 3 but fought her way back for a 2/1 win also on the 17th over Clare Stevens. Catherine Knight, Rachel Eder, Pam McTaggart and Cheryl Kemp all played their best on the day, but Pegasus were just too good.

Thanks to the Caddies, Chris Herd, Norm McTaggart, Helen McKay and Liz Warren.

Next game at Waitikiri against Waimari on Sept 8th.

Woodward Team update – from Gavin O’Hara team manager

 Woodward Cup - Round 3 – Coringa

The Harewood team continued their perfect start to this seasons Woodward Cup with a great 5-3 win over Coringa at Coringa.

Again, the engine room of the team Scott Manyweathers, Josh Smith, Dan Lundt, Sam Watkinson and Matt Mclean all come through their match with solid wins and playing some fine golf along the way, on a long and demanding Coringa track with firm and fast greens. Great efforts also from Gavin O’Hara, Kerry Branson & debutant Ryan Barham who all played hard, only to find themselves on the losing end of their matches.

This perfect start keeps Harewood at joint top of the table with Christchurch who have also started the season unbeaten.

The team have a break this weekend and look forward to Round 4 against Bottle Lake at Weedon’s in 2 weeks’ time.

Blank Team update – from Phil Barlow team manager

Great win against Templeton on Saturday. Was looking touch and go at the halfway mark, but the team stepped up, well done.
