Dear Guest, Friday, 08 October, 2021

Member Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow

Club Champs Update

With the course being closed the previous week due to high winds with balls rolling around on the greens and the tee times for the week just gone already booked in for a monthly medal off blue tees, the men’s club champs are now delayed a couple of weeks from the scheduled dates. The weekend just gone saw the women’s club champs from the previous week take place with the finals on course for this coming weekend. The men’s 2nd round of club champs is on this weekend as well.

The dates to note for men’s club champs are:

      · 2nd round – Sat 9 October (this weekend)

      · Semi-finals – 6 November (due to coring)

      · Finals – 13 November

Results Saturday 2 October

With the course setup for the Simon Cup on Sunday, there were some great scoring rounds considering fast greens and some tough pin placements. The men had a Monthly Medal off the blue tees and the women who were not playing in club champs had an Irish stableford round. The women had the following results:

      1. Susan Lovett (78)

      2. Annabel Chadwick (77)

      3. Julie Monk (77)

The men had 3 divisions with the following results:

Div A (Nett)

      1. Barry Coleman (71)

      2. Ray Coleman (71)

      3. Jeremy Guernsey (72)

Best Gross – Matt McLean (72)

Div B

      1. Wayne Coleman (70)

      2. Geol Hyee Lee (71)

      3. Bill Wekking (72)

Best Gross – Mark Duggan (88)

Div C

      1. Campbell Moulder (70)

      2. Huilong Liu (70)

      3. Sam Horsnell (71)

Best Gross – Errol Hume (92)

The winner of the Top Dog carpark for the Monthly Medal on a countback is Wayne Coleman.

The revised schedule for the coming weeks, including the delayed men’s club champs, is hanging in the window of the Pro Shop as well as next to the computer in the corner where you login for your round. Everyone please take note as it affects both men and women to varying degrees. A copy is also attached to this email. Sorry for yet another amendment but we are doing the best with what we are dealt. Good luck to all playing in club champs rounds and in particular to the ladies that are playing in the finals this weekend. Play well.

Placing, Flags and other information

A reminder that we are still at Level 2 this weekend, so the same rules apply as last weekend. Please do not remove flags at any stage of your round. Rakes are in bunkers, and toilets, ball washers and water fountains are in use.

Labour weekend Shotgun – Cancer Charities – 23 October

There will be a double Shotgun start event on the long weekend of Labour Day. The morning wave will start at 8:00am and the afternoon wave at 12:30pm and is a mixed stableford event. Please let the Pro Shop know if you are interested in entering. Entry will be $15 as usual and it is the Pink and Blue Cancer support tournament, so bring a few coins to donate and come dressed in an appropriate colour or in costume. We know it is a long weekend but if you are in town, please support the cause.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell

Learn to take your medicine

If you are in trouble on the course don't go for the ONE IN 10 SHOT - get the ball back on the fairway and move on. That can really help in keeping the big numbers off your score card.

Happy golfing!

Course Closed for Coring Next Week

As per the programme, the course is closed for annual maintenance next week in addition to some work being done on the asphalt paths.

If everything goes according to plan and the weather is kind, we may open the course again on Friday 15th but we will communicate this closer to the time.

The driving range is still open as is the pro shop, but the catering and bar won’t be until Saturday 16th.

Congratulations Neville… a threepeat!

Our General Manager, Neville, has managed to jointly win the Canterbury Golf Administrator of the Year along with Giles Beal from Russley Golf Club.

A presentation was made to Neville last evening at the Elmwood Trading Co, a valued sponsor of this event through Canterbury Golf.

Neville has been successful in giving Harewood both financial and administrative stability this last financial year and we have prospered as a result of his input. He also mentors a number of club managers in his role on the GMANZ board. He was part of the successful GMANZ/NZGCSA Auckland conference in the planning and delivery of content. He also played a significant role in jointly organising the Canterbury Club Forum held at Russley Golf club recently.

Neville brings a range of skills to the role, providing guidance to both staff and colleagues.

Well done Neville!

Senior Mens Interclub 2021 - Manager's Reports

Simon Cup – from Guy Chambers

It was another close match that didn't quite go our way with a 5 - 3 loss to Templeton at home last weekend. Conrad Harle and Doug Claridge had good wins at 1 and 2, Terry Coleman and Otis Holland battled hard but lost, Andy Lee won well and Ross Fowler struggled. Kerry Lake ended up losing and it came down to Hamish Hodgson going down the last but fell 1 short. Next week we're at Christchurch against leading team Waitikiri. Thanks to Allan Double and Dave Shipley for their continued support.

Blank Cup – from Phil Barlow

On Sun 26 Sept, the Blank team was at Templeton GC for Rounds 6 & 7 against Templeton and Clearwater respectively. With no spare players for the weekend, all were in for 2 rounds on the day. It was quite a different day to Saturday with rain and showers to greet the team.

Templeton proved to be as tough as usual and while we lost 6-2, some of the matches were closer than the results suggest. Colin Posa managed to go down the 18th to grasp a win, with Troy Clark taking a win at the top end of the team.

Clearwater was a different story in the afternoon with the team taking out a win 5-3 to end up staying in the top 4 so far. Four teams with the same number of wins, but a countback puts us 4th for now. Wins by Jason Strachan, Cam Giddens, Phil Barlow, Colin Posa and Benji Lapslie pushed the opposition down the list with some close losses by the others.

This weekend we are playing rounds 8 & 9 at home against Christchurch and Rangiora, so will be pushing to climb the leader board to secure a finals spot.

Woodward Cup - from Gavin O’Hara

The boys headed off to Waitikiri GC for a double header round with 1 hrs less sleep due to daylight savings. First up was a game Bottle Lake team, results below – the Boys battled to a good half.

Harewood 4 Bottle Lake 4

Matt McLean bt Andrew Green 2 up; Harry Weeds lost to Kieran Sharvin 4/3; Scott Manyweathers bt Lachie Mackay 5/4; Gavin O’Hara lost to Jed Robertson 3/1; Daniel Lundt bt Jason Campbell 2 up; Sam Watkinson bt Steve Bell 6/5; Ryan Barham lost to Aaron Neill 7/6; Kerry Branson lost to Daniel Asplin 2/1.

In the arvo the boys faced a strong Clearwater side and unfortunately came out on the wrong side.

Clearwater 5.5 Harewood 2.5

Archie Gothard lost to Matt McLean 2/1; Will Bastings bt Harry Weeds 1 up; Marcel Boet lost to Scott Manyweathers 2/1; Ryan Adams bt Gavin O’Hara 3/2; Leon Yee bt Daniel Lundt 3/2; Michael Bailey bt Sam Watkinson 2 up; Harris Kim bt Ryan Barham 2 up; Seb May halved with Kerry Branson.

Thanks to Dave Shipley and Matt O’Carroll for your support and to Josh Smith who is unable to play at the moment due to injury, filling in and being a great manager for the day, in supporting the team and providing updates throughout the day…

Team lie 5th in the table – 1 point off 4th spot…
