Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow
We are being treated to fantastic Saturday club day conditions at the moment, still and fine weather with nicely running greens as well. I hope you are all enjoying it and making the most of the state of the course at the moment. Well done to the greens staff for the current course conditions moving in towards winter.
This Saturday just gone was round 3 for the men’s 4BBB with all others playing stableford, and round 2 for the women’s 4BBB with the others playing multiple stableford. The next 4BBB round for both men and women are about 4 weeks away with the semi-finals. There were some tough battles out there on Saturday, so well done to those who came through to the semi’s.
Last Saturday’s results were:
Div A men (stableford)
- Ruben Carson (41)
- Don Robertson (40)
- Peter Batchelor (40)
Div B men (stableford)
- Scott Double (42)
- Harvey Teulon (40)
- Ryan Gooding (38)
Women (multiple stableford)
- Marguerite Leitch/Sandy Moore
- Julie Monk/Annabel Chadwick
- Joy Lord/Diane Deuart
Congratulations to you all.
Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
Copy the last piece of Cameron Smith’s putting routine to make more putts. At the Players Championship this year, he had 101 putts for the 4 rounds. It was the best putting performance on tour in fifty years. The last thing that Cameron Smith does before he putts is “Take a long look at the hole visualizing the ball going in at the perfect speed”.
Rule of the week (Removing loose impediments in a bunker – 12.2 a)
One of the new rules enacted in 2019 was that you may “remove loose impediments and movable obstructions”. In general, loose impediments are things such as stones, litter, clumps of soil etc, however this does not include anything attached to the ground within the bunker, such as a weed. For a full list of loose impediments, have a look here at the rules of the R & A.

Resignation of Neville Bamford – General Manager
You will have read a few days back in a letter from Phil Badger (Harewood Golf Club Board Chairman) of Neville’s resignation. Though we still have him as our ‘GM’ for a few weeks yet, I would like to take the opportunity as Club Captain to thank Neville on behalf of our membership for the 6 years of his service to our club. When he arrived, we had some less than desirable situations to deal with and through his leadership we are a stronger club today in many ways. The work he has undertaken both at our club and through the mentoring of other New Zealand wide Golf GM’s has been acknowledged through the awards he has received during his time with us. We hope to see Neville around the course in a more typical club member type role over the coming months.
Something one of our members said to me the other day on the range I believe rings true; “Many of our club members are about to find out exactly how much work Neville did for our club once he is gone”.
Best of luck in your new career direction Neville.
Enjoy your golf.
