Member News – 2 February 2024

Club Captain - Phil Barlow

Another warm and windy day greeted everyone last Saturday. The field was a little reduced compared to normal, but some great golf being played all the same. The highlight of the day for me was almost witnessing a hole in one on the 4th whilst standing on the green, with Jo McNicholl almost driving it into the cup from the tee. It wandered quietly up at the end to about ½ metre from the hole, and a great 2 was completed – well done. It would be fair to say there was quite a lot of encouragement from our 4!

We saw another great weekend of golf for Kiwi’s with Lydia Ko nearly winning for the 2nd straight week, but going down in a playoff, while new pro Kazuma Kobori took out his 2nd win in 2 weeks in Australia putting him 2nd on their order of merit.

This weekend sees the club Opening Day Shotguns take place. Sadly, the entry numbers are lower than we would like, so we are going to change the format from mixed teams Stableford to individual Stableford. The forecast is for showers and about 18 deg so come prepared.

Remember the Shootout competitions for both men and women are now underway, and I encourage anyone who hasn’t entered previously or is new to the club to ask about it at the Pro Shop, it’s a great event that takes place over the year.

A reminder the latest programme for the year is out and available at the Pro Shop, so grab a copy and stay ahead of what is coming up, as well as keeping an eye out here at Woodlands Word.

Next week’s competitions are Jean Dench All Irons for the ladies with others playing Stroke, while the men have the first Monthly Medal for 2024 with everyone playing blue tees.

Tip of the week – Undercover pro

Take Dead Aim

Not just for your feet but also knees, hips, shoulders, and club face. Most right-handed golfers aim right but this doesn’t always mean the ball will go right as often their swing will compensate for poor alignment. Check your alignment every practice session with an alignment stick, or one of your longer clubs laying in front of your toes.

Mid-Week Men Results - By David Williams-Jones

On Monday, Cyril White led the tributes and recollections for two former members of the MWM who passed earlier this month: Graham Gibson and Geoff Taylor. Two golfers at opposite ends of the playing spectrum but both contributed to and benefitted from the camaraderie and craic provided by the MWM.
